Cornelis Griep

Cornelis
Griep was born on tuesday September 10, 1839, at Yerseke
in the Netherlands. His father Jacob
Griep operated the
regular market boat to Rotterdam and his mother
Apolonia Sinke was a shopkeeper. She sold the
product that her husband transported.
Cornelis also earned his
living as a skipper, but around 1896 he decided
to emigrate. The reason who he did so is not
known, but among his American descendants the
story is told that, while fishing on the North
Sea, a US Navy vessel ran into his boat in a fog.
Cornelis was compensated fot the accident and
used that money to pay their passage to the
United States.
Cornelis was married
twice and got nine children. Four of them died at
a young age.

MARRIED
TO MARIA VAN DE BOS
On March 6, 1873, Cornelis Griep
married at Yerseke to Maria van de Bos from
Waarde. They lived at Yerseke and had a daughter Apolonia
(1874) and a son Johannes (1875).
A half year after the birth of their second child
his wife died, at Wemeldinge.

MARRIED
TO JACOBA KOPMELSOn March 30,
1876, Cornelis remarried at Kruiningen to Jacoba
Kopmels, widow of Ary Kaat. They lived at Yerseke
and had seven more children: Tanneke (1876), Frederik (1879), Jakob (1881), Jacoba (1883),
Joos (1885),
Lena (1886),
Pieter (1887)
and Apolonia (1890)
EMIGRATION
In 1896, when Cornelis is 56
years old, the whole family migrated to America. The
voyage was made from Anhtwerp on the vessel Kensington
of the Red Star Line.
They arrived at New York on May
19, 1896, and settled in Passaic, Bergen County, New Jersey. They lived at
257 Autumn Street and Cornelis earned his living
as a labourer.

DECEASE Cornelis Griep
died, 73 years old, at Passaic on September 24,
1912. Later on his wife moved to 351 Summer
Street in Clifton. She became 91 years old and
died on August 5, 1930. Both are buried at Lodi
Cemetary.

Their first child, Apolonia,
was born at Yerseke on March 7, 1874. She died at
the age of 12 on July 7, 1886. |

Yerseke at April 9, 1875, and probably died
shortly after his birth.

/ Trina (1876-1948) |

Tanneke was born
on saterday December 29, 1876 at Yerseke in the
Netherlands. At 19 years of age she migrated
together with her parents to America. There she
called herself Trina.
On October 2, 1897 she married Rienk Spaanstra
from Winsum, Friesland and lived in Passaic and
in Clifton, New Jersey. Rienk was employed by the
Paterson Parchment Paper Company of Passaic and
later the Garfields Home Laundry. He was an avid
fisherman and won many prizes catching fish.
They were both members of the Northside Christian
Reformed Church of Passaic.
Trina died on February 6, 1948, eight years after
her husband. |

| Frederik
Griep (1879-1952) |

Frederik was
born on thursday November 6, 1879 at Yerseke in
the Netherlands. At 16 years of age he migrated
together with his parents to America.
On March 3, 1917 he married Annie Landry. They
had two children: Frederik Griep jr
(married Marry-Ann and died in 1997) and Josephine.
Fred Griep went to Texas and lived there during
all his adult life. He worked in the docks and
ships in Texas.
Frederik died on January 5, 1952, eight years
after his wife. |

Their second son Jakob was
born on May 30, 1881 at Yerseke in the
Netherlands. He died at the age of 13, on June
25, 1894. |

Jacoba
Griep was born on monday March 26, 1883
at Yerseke in the Netherlands. At 13 years of age
she migrated with his parents to America. There
she is called Cora.
In New Jersey she married Nicholas De Vries, a
member of the Clifton Police Force. They had four
children: Sadie, Cornelius, Nicholas and Jean.
For a few years, after she was widowed in 1952,
she lived in Florida but returned to Clifton and
stayed there for the rest of her life.
She died in Clifton, New Jersey on March 15,
1966. |

| |
Joos Griep was
born on thursday January 29, 1885 at Yerseke in
the Netherlands. At 11 years of age he migrated
with his parents to America. He grew
up in Passaic, New Jersey. In 1917, at 32 years
of age, he enlisted in the Army and filed his
intent to become a naturalized citizen of the
USA. George Greep, as he then called himself, got
his military training at Camp Beauregard,
Louisiana During World War I he was stationed in
Panama.
He
never married and after his stint in the Army, he
spent his life 'on the road'. From time to time
he would come to visit his family in Clifton, New
Jersey.
He
died on December 10, 1953 in California, but he
is buried in New Jersey.

Pieter Griep was

Netherlands. He died after five days. |

| Apolonia
/ Pauline (1890-1967) |

Apolonia was
born on May 26, 1890 at Yerseke. At 6 years of
age she migrated with her parents to America.
Pauline worked in the fabric mills of the
Paterson-Passaic area. As time changed and
employment opportunaties in that region
diminished, she moved to Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania.
That is where she met her future husband Stephen
E. Hardin, who came from Missouri. He enlisted
and served in the Army during the
Spanish-American War. He was employed as a
printer by Curtis Publishing Company, to print
covers for the Saterday Evening Post magazine.
They had one child: Lee Hardin.
Pauline and Stephen lived in the Philadelphia
area for the rest of their life. Pauline died on
March 30, 1967, sixteen years after her husband.
Their grave is at the Sunset Memorial Park in
South-Hampton, Pennsylvania. |
