GRIP at Glostorp and Maglarp
Two Swedish Grip-families from the coastal area between Malmö and Trelleborg

> [Nederlands]

In 1778 at Skabersjö, a village in Sweden near Malmö, Anders Christophersson Grip was born. He moved to the nearby village of Glostorp and there he became the ancestor of a Grip family.

The Grip family at Maglarp -- more to the south near the coast -- has Niels Göransson Grip as the ancestor. He was born in 1797. Several Grip's from Maglarp were sailors and some of them settled in the Netherlands and the USA.

It is not yet known whether both families are also related to each other.

THE SWEDISH PROVINCE OF SKÅNE

  SKÅNE

Both villages, Glostorp and Maglarp, are situated in the southwest of Skåne, the southernmost province of Sweden. For many centuries this region has been a part of Denmark, but the treaty of Roskilde in 1658 made it a part of Sweden.

The area of Skåne is 2.6% of that of Sweden, but it is inhabited by almost 14% of its population. So, relatively speaking, it is rather densily populated.

  COAT OF ARMS

The coat of arms of the province of Skåne showes a 'krönt griphuvud', or a griffin's head with a crown. 'Grip' is the Swedish word for griffin.

The coat of arms is granted to Malmö in 1438, and later on to the whole province, by the Danish King Erik from Pomerania. It won't be coincidental that Pomerania also has a griffin ('Greif'), although completely shown, on its coat of arms.
