The Netherlands

In Holland there are many mills and the farmers have still wooden shoes painted in red or yellow.
Agriculture is very important besides; one cultivates many flowers, especially in the west of the country.
Holland has also an important role for the distribution and the carriage of the goods, Rotterdam is the largest port of the world and one can see much Dutch trucks on the roads of Europe.

In Holland there are many canals and much dams to protect against the sea but also against overflowing rivers.
Nijmegen, the city where I live, is in the east of the country and still there are a polder and dams.
it is said that about a third of the Netherland is below the sea level.

These houses, at the edge of a canal of Amsterdam, date from the seventeenth century: ¨ The golden century ¨ of Holland. It is the age of Companies bringing back spices of East-Indie and porcelain of China but also of the Dutch great painters like Vermeer and Rembrandt.
