George Orwell (1903-50), novelist, sociologica! writer and the author, in
Animal Farm, of a satire which shows
every sign of being a permanent addition to literature, was one of the most
dynamic critics of the age in which he lived his all too brief life. He affected
the thoughts of his contemporaries, and in this sympathetic assessment Mr.
Hopkinson shows how and why he did so.
Mr. Hopkinson, formerly a scholar of Pembroke College, Oxford, made an outstanding
name for himself by his editing of Picture Post during its first decade of
life. He has also published novels and short stories, including a distinguished
collection,
The Transitory Venus (1948); his most recent publications
are
Down the Long Slide ( 1949) and
Love's Apprentice (1953).
