1961 Ruska b1 buggy

I Peet was searching for a 70's style street or sand buggy for my girlfriend as a new buggy project. Sadly we are not Orange County Choppers, so we needed some more time to build the project (money!!!!!).

After we searched for a new "theme" buggy, we found this buggy at Volks repair NL. they told us the engine was worn out and the interior wasn`t that great but that was exactly what we were lookin' for.A real ruska B1 buggy from the 70`s.The car was street legal and build in Holland and had a re-assembled soft top. We decided that it needed a new roll-cage for safety and for better looks.

The project

The story..

After removing the old 1300cc engine, we replaced it for a 1641 power plant, with a single carb for the time beeing. The future is to replace the carb for a twin carb turbo engine.

If you ask me, this buggy looks like shit, the rollbar and the frontshield is far out of shape, too high and not in-line with the car.

The idea is to build a rollcage like a dune buggy, so the fuel tank has to move to the back of the car to make place for the rollcage who is fitted at the front beam of the car.

We started with the rear part of the rollcage. We used 1,5 inch tube too make it as low a possible. After this we made the rear section (click on picture to see).

The tubes we use are 7 mm thick. This might look overdone, but we will fit an aluminum gas tank at the rear so it has to be safe on the molding to protect the driver with a collapsing of another vehicle.

So now I have lowerd the Rollbar, the next problem is to lower the steering and the padels and the seats. First I have to mould the alum. tank. The next thing is to lower the floor pannels. Then I have to remove the orginal fuel tank.
