TURKEY

Turkey is the “average” country in Diplomacy. It’s total positive result (Win, Draw, Survival) is exactly as the Total Average. Also its average on all individual results is closest to average from all the seven powers. Does this make Turkey a dull country to play with? I don’t think so, there’s enough entertainement for the Sultan with the Black Sea and the Balkans at his doorstep.

Average on all results, but a lot of differences between the results of the individual openings used.

Not the usual top three, but a top four. In 2003 the Bosphorous was still in second place and an opening with such good results deserves a place at the toptable. The Russian Defence, aka The Bottleneck, is still the most popular Turkish opening, although its popularity is dropping fast. On the other hand the Positive Results gained with the Bottleneck are on the increase.

Besides the four already discussed openings are there other Turkish openings doing better than the Bottleneck and the Russian Attack?

Timbo Sweeney is the only Turk with 3 builds. All Soloist Sultans build a fleet in Smyrna. By doing this they were able to break out their corner. Herbert and Mike broke out even quicker, as they had a fleet in AEG by the end of 1901. Two Turks (Michael and Aaron) got hold of Greece in 1901. Only in Before the Storm BLA was owned by Russia.
