Sunset over the Parmey, January 10, 2005

Although winter hasn't even begun yet, the early morning light is already different and days are getting longer. A cold spell is due next week and we'll have to bring thermal underwear on our trip up north. But thank God, the worst is over: November and December with their grayness, humidity, rain and autumn storms.

After eleven months we're back on Schiermonnikoog, the smallest of the northern islands of the Netherlands. On Monday, when all the weekend tourists have left, the island is even quieter than before. The emptiness of the landscape, the sun and fresh sea wind are nurturing. We take a twelve miles walk thru the marshes and dunes, and have a wonderful brunch in the village afterwards.

Live music at Mechoui, Folkingestraat 38, Groningen.

Although we've rented our cottage until Friday, we decide to leave early and spend a night and day in the city of Groningen before we go home. It's been more than enough: we're full and satisfied. Because our favorite vegetarian restaurant 'Brussels Lof' is closed, we end up in Mechoui, a nice Moroccan restaurant with live music.

From the regular collection of the museum: installation with parts of a Volkswagen Beetle.Diaghilev Exhibition: costume for the Blue Bird. In: the Sleeping Princess, 1921. By Léon Bakst.

No visit to Groningen is complete without a visit to the Groninger Museum. Even though the present Diaghilev exhibition with early 20th century theatre costumes and paintings of artists (Website Groninger Museum.) isn't quite our cup of tea, a visit to this museum is always worthwhile.

Guppy or Million's Fish (Poecilia reticulata)

Minutian's sister who lives in a stuffed one-room apartment has already three aquaria and an Indian Stick Insect in a jelly jar. So when one of her guppies (More information on livebearers.) gave birth to a bunch of beautiful babies she asked us to adopt them. Last week in Groningen we bought a giant bowl; this weekend we moved them to their new home. We added a slice of zucchini for the Siamese Algae Eater.
