Thursday, August 14 With temperatures around 22°C (72°F) the official heatwave is over. But the draught is still causing major problems in the western part of the country (below sealevel). Low groundwater levels will cause the peaty soil to shrink (like a sponge) and dikes to bed down. In addition the wooden foundations of 16th century houses will start to rot irreversibly. Therefore brackish (sea) water has to be pumped into the Rhine-delta. But this may have a devastating effect upon (freshwater) nature and farmlands in the area. Sunday, August 24
