Back on Samos, what a treat! While temperatures in Holland hardly exceed 14 °C (57 °F) with lots of rain, here we have no less than 31 °C (88 °F), and at the end of the week it will be even getting warmer! We spend hours at the beach, reading, doing nothing, and for all this hard labour we get the most wonderful sunsets in the evening as well. Aren't we blessed?! Monday, June 8
A playful beach panorama. That's how it looks, that's how it is. While at the same time it's a pretty bizarre image. For the inner tube was "brought" to us, only a few hours ago, by a group of illegal immigrants from Turkey. We saw them walking down the road, just before they were picked up by the border patrol. When we arrived here at Tsamadou Beach we found what was left of their identities and maybe the last remnants of their self-esteem: a few torn photographs and some temporary ID's made in Turkey.

Gay Pride in Athens. We didn't expect much. But when the Parade finally starts marching towards Syntagma Square and Stadiou Street is suddenly filled with tens, hunderds and at last thousands of gays and lesbians, we have to fight back our tears. We would never have believed that in this homophobic society so many young men and women would dare to come out. The atmosphere is great, playfull, gay. For a moment it feels as if we are back in Holland in the early 80's. How wonderful it feels to be here!

Months ago we learned that our Sarah suffered from a thyroid gland disorder. We immediately realised that she would not make it to the end of the year. Ever since we've been even more grateful for each day that she was here with us. We've spent gallons of milk on her request! This morning we knew it was time to say goodbye. In the last couple of weeks she'd lost a lot of weight. Since a few days a bacterial infection was taking over her modus operandi. This morning our little gray one woke up still conscious, but at 9.15 am, 15 years old, she passed away. We miss her dearly. For who will be able to lead the Malarah Trust Fund in her place? |
