British Society of Amsterdam
Sailing:
General Information (Kaag)
TIME & PLACE
We meet at 12:00 on the terrace of
the Jachthaven 't Fissertje-Restaurant "Benjamin" (new name for old location), Beatrixlaan 42-46, 2159LJ Kaag
(Island). (tel. 0252 544266). I can usually be reached on 0615245542
just before sailing (but not other times).
We start with lunch. The boats
are booked from 13:30 and we can sail until 17:00 - 18:00. They
are now located in Martin Hoogenboom's own harbour at Julianalaan 72b.
Usually there will be an
(optional) barbecue at my place which is close by.
BOATS
The
boats are Valks. They are about 6m in length with a
fixed keel. They are quite stable and accommodate 3-4 in comfort and 5 at a pinch.
Beginners as well as more experienced
sailors are welcome, provided we have sufficient skippers available.
CLOTHING
One is likely to get wet sailing even
in good weather, so bring a waterproof jacket and overtrousers. Old
plimsolls (sneakers) are fine for footwear.
COST
Boats cost 60 Euro (BM) or 70 Euro (Valk) to hire for the day so cost per head is the region
of 14 to 24 Euro.
BOOKINGS &
CANCELLATIONS
To be sure of having boats we book
them in advance the preceding Wednesday. The maximum number who can
sail on a particular Sunday is four times the number of helmsmen who
have agreed to come and we frequently have to disappoint people who
apply late. For this reason it is important that anyone on the list
above who cannot come inform me as soon as possible so that another can
have the chance of coming in their place and so that we do not wait for
them in vain on Sunday morning. We risk loosing any boats that are
reserved but not claimed by 13:30 h.
HOW TO GET THERE
Directions for getting there by car are as
follows (It is about a 25 min. drive from Amsterdam.):
Take the A4 (direction Den Haag) well
past Schiphol. Keeping to the right-hand lanes you will branch onto the
A44 (direction Den-Haag Centrum). Take the second exit (Abbenes
/Kaag-dorp) and turn left at the T-junction, following the signs to
Kaag-dorp.
Take the car ferry (shown below)

(4.00 Euro return for a car
+passengers, 0.90 Euro for cyclist/pedestrian) onto Kaag Eiland.
Leaving the ferry bear right and
follow the (very) narrow road (Juliananlaan) for about 500m until it
forks. Bear left and
continue almost to the end of the road when you will see the Jachthaven
Eymershof and its car park on your right. The terrace is on the
lakeside of the building.
There is also the option to park in
Buitenkaag before you take the ferry and come over on foot (about 1 km).
I will try to put those without transport in touch with drivers with
spare spaces. If this is not possible one can get to the ferry
using the Meertaxi service
http://www.haarlemmermeer.nl/meertaxi from Nieuw Vennep train station to (Buitenkaag halte Veerpont).
It has to be booked at least one hour in advance on 0900-6337829 or via boeking@vza.nl.
[Note that this has changed compared to last year]
