Yoga & Creative Dance

Rangeeni (Andrea) Feldhoffer

‘The driving force behind every practice and, in my lessons too, is my desire that everything I am and everything I do clearly shows the spirit, the essence: it shows which ‘music’ should be played and how, and it motivates making the right choices.’

Nataraja Yoga

Powerful Ashtanga Yoga

The yoga process is all about achieving more consciousness, truth / authenticity, simplicity and love. Having a free inner attitude is a fundamental part of being in the world instead of the restricted and determined behavioural patterns which are enforced upon us.  When the body’s unlimited life energy is refreshed and rejuvenated it creates a foundation for more quietness and contentment.  Peace in one’s own home is a prerequisite to maintain life energy and to anchor oneself instead of feeling ‘empty’ because of all the efforts life demands.

I find the most fascinating aspect is to be occupied with the essence, consciousness.  This is what practising yoga is all about and this ‘practice’ happens in daily life.  Practising yoga is the mission to remember and to awaken, to take responsibility for what one is as a person. My body is my (musical) instrument and my temple. This obviously demands an extreme care if you want to create something authentic and unique.  The driving force behind every practice and in my lessons too is my desire that everything I am and do clearly shows the spirit, the essence: it shows which music should be played and how, and it motivates making the right choices.’

What is Yoga ?

The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘yui’ which among other things means, to bind, to join together, concentration of thought. Mahadev Desai describes it as follows: 'Yoga means the yoking of all the powers of body, mind and the will. Yoga means a type of a poise of the soul which enables one to look at every aspect of life evenly.'

”Yoga is one of the six orthodox systems in Indian philosophy.  One of the classical works on yoga is the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali (eighth-fold path of Ashtanga yoga).  According to Indian thought, the highest universal soul (Paramatma or God) is present in everything, the individual human spirit (jivatma) is a particle, a spark of this Universal Spirit. The yogi’s aim is to connect the individual spark of the spirit with the Universal Spirit.” (from Yoga Dipika by B.K.S. Iyengar).

Ashtanga Yoga

According to Patanjali, Ashtanga Yoga can be divided into 8 levels or stadiums of yoga:

1.                 Yama (universal order when it concerns the outside/ external  world

2.                 Niyama (self-discipline)

3.                 Asana (practice of postures)

4.                 Pranayama (rhythmic control of breathing)

5.                 Pratyahara (restraining the senses to within)

6.                 Dharana (concentration)

7.                 Dhyana (meditation)

8.                 Samadhi (to reach the superconscious through deep-meditation/liberation)

Powerful Nataraja Yoga

Through asana, breathing and movement are linked.  Micro-movements are combined with breathing in and out: the asana pulsates.  Movements are linked and ‘energetic’; made powerful by the ‘counter pull’ principle: the polarisation (plus and minus, yin-yang, heaven and earth…) where the opposites are simultaneously activated. Movement and ‘countermovement’ pulsate at the same time and create a dynamic balance. The emphasis in Nataraja Yoga is on the precise alignment of the exercises with special attention to the detail and flowing pulsating link with the asana.  Chanting and repeating mantras help to intensify and add profoundness to the exercises.

Shiva Nataraja............

Nataraja is an aspect of the god Shiva, the destroyer, the fire god.  Shiva Nataraja is the god of the cosmic dance and where everything swings, sings and moves in a large concert of attraction and rejection, the cosmic pulsating provides a subtle balance between the two poles.

Prenatal Yoga

Today more women than ever are under increasing pressure because of social demands and the needs of their family. Life is busy, fleeting, and shallow. Shallowness has become necessary for survival. Busyness and growing bulkiness make it more difficult to take the time for your pregnancy and to enjoy and appreciate this intense experience. While this is happening all around you will have a growing need for deeper feelings commitment and intimacy.

During pregnancy there is definitely a need for more quietness, rest, depth and simplicity to be able to concentrate on the new life within your body. The preparations surrounding childbirth provide more insight and consciousness for the initiation of new life in its source and its essentiality.

Among other things prenatal yoga is all about the connection between inside and out, the physical and the conscious. This connection comes through integrating breathing into every movement. Breathing is consciousness. It brings you more into contact with your body, the inner self and with the baby.

Prenatal yoga not only teaches you the right way to breathe during pregnancy but generates, through a subtle way of moving and breathing, more life energy, nourishment, quietness and strength for mother and child.

Method:

Breathing and Movement

Through quietness exercises you will learn to concentrate and reach your inner self. Movement exercises keep your body strong and supple especially your lower back and the pelvic area that during labour is heavily burdened.

You will learn to breathe in a way so that you will relax well and to use your breathing to assist you during child birth.  You will also learn different breathingmethods to facilitate the period of your pregnancy and the labour process.

The course also covers special lessons together with your partner about the different birth positions and supportive massages. The partner lessons focus particularly on doing the exercises together. Learning to observe and perceive is important so that the partner can provide support during childbirth.

In order to get the maximum benefit from this course it is essential that you attend the lessons at an early stage of your pregnancy. That way the exercises will become a good habit and become part of your daily routine so that they work at the vital moment.

Course Yoga Prenatal

  • September 5th, 18.45 - 20.15 hrs
  • At 'Het Bewuste Pad', Langlaarsteenweg, Aartselaar
  • Costs: 10 euros per lesson

Nataraja Creative Dance

Holistic dance technique (polarisation method)

and dance improvisation

This is all about Creative Dance and the development of consciousness through the medium of dance.  The basis of Creative Dance is the polarisation method, a dance technique which combines modern and classical vocabulary with breathing of special sounds and visualisation exercises. The contra pull in the muscular system is the basis for pulsating movements. Sitting, lying and standing exercises provide a precise body alignment and is  basis to prepare you for dance improvisation.

The exercises create more balance between expression and impression. They stimulate a strong body core and a relaxed posture which strengthens your personal life energy, expression and impression.

Creative Dance is suitable for those who want to deepen and enrich their own (movement, dance, acting, singing) techniques through a comprehensive and specific method. It is also suitable for those who are looking for new impulses for their workfield.

Previous experience in consciousness methods like, for example, yoga, meditation or modern dance is desirable.

“I have always looked for a method to train my body at the highest level and which would fit in perfectly with modern and classical dance methods and, at the same time, would combine with breathing, sounds and my concentration so that body and spirit were attuned to one another. Expression and impression become one, my inner body is clean and flexible,  strong and frail at the same time and my movements are nourished by inspiration and remain fascinating so that every form of stereotype disappears. I wanted to become a vigorous dancing inspiration source. Honest and wild, unpredictable and always youthful. Life had to show a surprising intensity in each performance… I discovered all of this in the polarisation technique.”
