Poso

Poso is unfortunately the heart of one of Indonesia's unstable regions. In 2000 Muslims and Christians were fighting and slaughtering each other because of an escalated conflict. In and around Poso you can still the remains of burned houses. Since then the region is under strict military and incidents still occur. Too bad, because the area itself is beautiful and is not really explored nor exploited.

Poso, as you can see there's not much left of this ghost-town.

I found this still acceptable to photograph. I didn't take photos of the worst area just outside Poso.

This is the Poso River in Tentena. Tentena and Poso witnessed several atrocities since 1998, but the worst was in 2000 when Muslims and Christians began to start slaughtering each other and dumping bodies in the Poso River.

Deforesting near Ampana, too bad beautiful Sulawesi starts to see more and more of that.

Mother nature makes the road between Poso and Pagimana a very difficult one.

When I arrived in Ampana I wanted to catch the ferry in Pagimana to Gorontalo that only leaves every other day. Due to the excellent transport connections time had gone faster than I expected. The only affordable option was to charter a motorbike for 100km. After a 4-hour ride on the back of this small bike, a flat tire and a thunderstorm, I missed the ferry! The captain had decided to leave one hour earlier!! Can you believe it?

A nice view from the Pagimana lighthouse! Please click here or on the photo for an enlargement.

I went to Luwuk on the opposite side of Pagimana on the peninsula and took a photo of these 2 boys who just caught a snapper.
