Elsephere - Blind Leading the Blind
Lucretia Records 2002
"Behind the creative name of "Elsesphere" hides one of the most talented bands within the progressive metal scene. If you are searching for inventive and demanding music, don't look elsewhere ... look for
Elsesphere!"
That is to be found on the bio that was delivered to me with the CD. So do I have to say anything more??? Yes I have, nothing negative but also nothing really positive. The music is maybe something between Dream Theater and Symphony X but I'm not really into progressive metal but I have too say that this music is really not bad. The intro "Intro (metal)" is a normal instrumental intro but the name is quite funny. Intromental is namely the management bureau of this band :).
"Hole Inside My Head" is a catchy song but certainly not my favorite due to the for me irritating singing lines in the refrain. But the rest of the number is quite cool. Next song "Mastermind" is much better with some female vocals in the song. The song sounds quite heavy and
threatening. "Luna Sea" is with a lot of solos, both keyboard and guitar, a good song for the progressive metal fans. A good live one.
The musicians are all very capable. Singer Jonny "Bix" Berndtsson has a good range in his voice and a
aggressive touch in it. And their is a good basic with drummer Mikael Kvist and bassist Lollo. Keyboard player Joakim Floke (who is recently replaced by Andreas Kronqvist) playes melodic but sounds not too dominate in the music. And the guitar parts played by Mikael Bergemalm are good with some nice solos.
"Andromeda Strain" is more of the same but is a bit heavier while "Waging A War" is faster and therefore a favorite song of mine. I can't help it that I like fast ones :). The refrain is btw slower but it is still a fast one for me. "Last Night On Earth", midtempo with a good melodic line in it. "Seasons In Hell" is a nothing special song. And a nothing special song is a song which is not good or bad. Last one "Requiem For A Dream"is a beautiful acoustic ballad wich fits perfectly in in (else)sphere of the album. It is almost my favorite song but it is too damn short!
Overall is it a good album with a clear and good production, good musicians and some good songs. But there is a long way too go for them if they
want to reach the level of a band like Dream Theater or Symphony X. But they are on the right way with this debut album.
74/100
