Wind Up 2003
This band doesn’t really need an
introduction anymore, which is rather strange for a relatively new
band. How’d they manage to achieve that is easy.. their big break
through happened with the release of the movie Daredevil, as a comic
fan I don’t always like the fact that they turn them into movies
but the fact that “Bring me to Life” was on the soundtrack sure
made up for a lot. The first time I heard from Evanescence, I was
watching MTV and I was stunned, I thought Lacuna Coil had released a
single and were actually going to get the credit they deserve, this
thought however was brutally taken from me when I heard the vocals
of Paul McCoy. Not sure whether it was just another band with a
guest appearance by a lovely lady I went on a quest on the
internet… twenty minutes and twenty ways of typing Evanescence
later I finally arrived on their site. Woohoo, it was the other way
around, the male vocals were done by a guest musician and the girl
was the actual singer and goes by the name of Amy Lee, hummm they
had also just released the album Fallen, time to continue the quest
towards the music store. Bloody hell, sold out… what's this world
going to?
A small week later I had the cd and it was
time to give it a go and as I tossed it into my cd player I already
started to sing “Bring me to Life”.
The first song on the cd is not what I
expected, a sort of mixture between industrial and even some new
wave, but that’s mainly because of the effects used on Lee’s
voice.
Second song is one I couldn’t get enough
off, yes, “Bring me to Life”, I don’t think I have to write
about how it sounds… “My Immortal” is simply superb and a
great mixture between Linkin Park and Lacuna Coil, although Amy
doesn’t really sound like Christina it still has a great
resemblance, the guitars are in perfect harmony with the vocals and
gives me the feeling that Evanescence is perhaps an idea from a big
record company to enrich themselves some more while the popularity
of this type of metal seems to last, however this is not the case,
Evanescence is a damn good well oiled music machine mainly resting
upon the shoulders of vocalist Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moodey.
This duo wrote most of the music.
The cd is pretty laid back and doesn’t
require heavy listening sessions to get into it, however the songs
aren’t simple nor are the lyrics so I wouldn’t recommend just
one or two quick listenings but a couple of intense ones as well,
perhaps in the late hours while your doing your reading on Metal
Guardian, or perhaps in your discman or car on your way to
work.
Songs like “Tourniquet” and “My Last
Breath” have the potential of getting big hits and with their foot
in the door I’m pretty sure we’ll hear more from them soon
enough, hopefully after the summer because it would be a shame if
this cd is just a one summer hit. |

The album is a mid tempo cd which will fit
nicely into basically everyone’s cd collection, whether you’re a
metaller or just a “once in a while rocker” I’m pretty sure
you’ll like this album.
