Mystic Prophecy - Regressus
Nuclear Blast 2003

Holy shit, no compromises, no keyboards, just plain fast and powerful metal... and yes a smile did appear on my face the first time I listened to the debut from Mystic Prophecy. I had heard a little about them before hand, their debut was going to be the best since "Glory to the Brave" the spectacular debut of HammerFall.
This however is not true, in the days when HammerFall unleashed their first upon the metalworld it was the perfect time, metalheads woke up and it was time to raise our fists and walk proud once again, now a couple years later we're still walking and we're basically being overwhelmed by all the bands that show up on our metal doorstep.

So many different bands have come and gone in the years since Glory to the Brave that its getting harder to stand out. Mystic Prophecy is one of these bands that would have suffered from such expected difficulties if it wasn't for the musicians and the perfect production that really makes their debut worth while. Where other bands start getting better on their second or perhaps third cd Mystic Prophecy holds no limits back and sets the mood with opening song "Calling from Hell".

While listening to this song you know exactly why you started listening to metal in the first place, it makes these small muscles in the neck twitch and its the voice of Liapakis that really gets you going. Liapakis known from Valley's Eve has a raw but great voice that fits perfect with the guitar work from Gus G. from Dream Evil, however where Dream Evil is a lot like HammerFall, Mystic Prophecy isn't.

Mystic Prophecy can be best described as a mixture of Valley's Eve and Iced Earth, oh yes I dare to compare them to the masters of metal. Songs like "Regressus - Lost in Time" appear to be taken straight from Schaffer's notebook. The songs have such power that you don't even notice they don't sing about fairy's dwarves or dragons which is a relief after the Rhapsody and LoTR hype.

"Lords of Pain" reminds me a bit of Helloween combined with a touch of Megadeth where it just slides off into an awesome song where your neck seems to have a mind of its own whether its slide nodding or fierce headbanging, damnit you will move!!

Regressus fits twelve songs, and clocks a little over 50 minutes, however for those who spend a tad more cash you can get the limited edition and hear the Mystic Prophecy men play two bonus tracks, namely "Fight the World" from Manowar and Iron Maidens "Sanctuary", also appearing on the ltd edition you can hear a very original piece of music; the drum track to "Sanctuary" probably a mistake but still fun to hear although it gets a little boring after a bit, true metallers of course take this as an opportunity and plug in the ol' six string and play along with drummer Dennis Ekdahl (Raise Hell)

The debut of Mystic Prophecy is surely worth buying and I recommend it to anyone who wants simply metal and no choirs or orchestra's for a change. The songs and the production are superb and I surely hope this isn't a one time event for Mystic Prophecy because if they keep this up they can compete with masters like Iced Earth, Helloween and (old) Testament.

For those who hadn't noticed, I love this cd,.. I cant help it, it has everything I want, fast songs, slick no show off solo's and good vocals, and none of the stuff I don't. I will do my personal best to stay on top of any events evolving the band in the future, Mystic Prophecy's debut may not be as glorious as HammerFalls but it sure as hell makes me want to raise my fist and walk proud as the metalhead I am!!

ALL HAIL MYSTIC PROPHECY
