Sepultura - Roorback
SPV 2003

Sepultura are back with their third album since former lead singer (current Soulfly lead throat) Max Cavalera left the band. Many fans, myself included, have been unimpressed with the nu-metal style that dominated their last two efforts, and have come close to, if not already, closing the door on this once powerful force of the thrash/death metal scene. However, the boys from Brazil are ready to kick that door down and deliver a pounding to your ear drums with this album. Aptly titled "Roorback".

The first song, "Come Back Alive",  gets your attention quick, with a fast paced guitar riff that sounds like a mix between old Sepultura, and Nevermore. It's enough to get you drooling in anticipation of the rest of the album. The next few songs are a bit of a let down. With no solo's and slower riffs overall. But they're still some decent songs, with guitar and vocal work that's good enough to keep you listening. The second half of the album is where it picks back up. Songs like "Corrupted", "Mind War" and "Leech" will have you doing some headbanging, as the guitar and drums get faster, and the vocals more intense. It's a shame that most of the better songs on this album are the shortest one's.

It makes it seem like it's over before it really gets started. But in this day and age of the "Mommy and Daddy didn't give me what I wanted, so I'm pissed off at the World now" style of "metal", I'll take what I can get. The album finishes up with an Outro that starts out true to Sepultura's form.. Odd noises mixed together, followed by a long silence.

Ah, but don't be fooled, that's not all. Eventually, singer Derrick Green's voice pops up, along with some simple strumming on the guitar by Andreas. Sounding something like a jazz musician, Green states "My day started off with some complications, but everyday has complications, and people just have to deal with them. But my complication is something that's been bothering me, maybe I should tell ya'll 'bout it". What follows is one of the most hillarious things I have ever heard. As Green sings to you, in jazz style, about "Paulo's microphone". You can't help but laugh as Green struggles not to crack up while singing about Paulo's broken microphone, and you'll find yourself listening again just for grins and giggles.

Overall, this is a very solid album. A nice mix of old and new Sepultura. Good guitar and drum work, and very good vocal work. A lot of people have unfairly attacked Green's style, simply because he's not Max. But honestly, would you respect him if he sounded like nothing more than a clone of Max? Doubtful... His vocals are strong and aggressive, and though he could use some work with his clean vocals, he still does a damn good job. To all those who said they were dead, Sepultura have responded with a resounding "Fuck you!". If you are, or were a fan of the band, you owe it to yourself to give "Roorback" a chance. You just might be in for a nice suprise.

78/100
