Silent Edge – The
eyes of the shadow
DVS Records 2003
Finally after three years of waiting the debut CD from
Silent Edge has been released.
The band was started six years ago by guitarist Emo
Suripatty and keyboard player Minggus Gaspersz. Singer Willem Verwoert joined them during 1999.
When they released a two-track demo CD in August 2000,
the buzz started. The demo became ‘demo of the month’ in Dutch metal
magazine Aardschok. And in
December 2001 they won the annual ‘Metal Bash’ , a contest organized
by (again) Aardschok. They gave the studio time they won to another band,
because they had already booked their own time at another studio.
In 2002 they finally began the recording of ‘The eyes
of the shadow’ in the New
Road Music Studio’s. During the recordings Marco Kleinnibbelink (-ex
Deadhead, Syrinx) joined the band as a full time member.
Knowing them from the time they released their demo, I
was very anxious to know how their full-length album would sound like.
Luckily for me they didn’t disappoint me at all. The
album is full of great songs. Singer Willem Verwoert is truly a discovery.
He sounds great in all the songs.
The
CD starts with ‘Through different eyes’, which features a superb
melodic solo. ‘Savage Symphony’ is a song from the demo era; this new
arrangement gives the song something extra. Pounding rhythm, powerful
singing and a nice unison keyboard-guitar solo. ‘Wasted Lands’ is more
of an epic song, slower in the beginning, but all this changes after about
three and a half minutes. The rhythm changes and some heavier drums,
guitar, bass work come in. This all leads to a keyboard solo.
‘The curse I hold within’ is the real ‘ballad’,
it starts with only an acoustic guitar. Willem really sings this one with
emotion.
‘Crusades’ is
an instrumental, which leads to ‘For ancients times’, which continues
in the same rhythm. This is also an epic kind of song. It clocks more than
eight and half minutes. In the middle of the song an Eastern theme changes
the song. Followed by a melodic guitar solo.
‘Lost Conscience’ is somewhat similar in style as
‘Wasted Lands’, a real epic song, with great backing vocals.
The next song, ‘Under a shaded Moon’ is also from their demo. A
truly superb song. Great guitar work, powerful singing, awesome!
The fastest one on the CD must be ‘Rebellion’,
pounding drums, fast guitars, this song has it all. The song also has a
great guitar and keyboard solo and the singing is perfect.
The CD ends with a song ‘Rebellion (the awakening)’ , a piano ballad. Which
later fades out in a smooth guitar solo.
The conclusion is that this CD is truly a real gem. If
you like great powerful progressive rock/metal, with some hints of
neo-classical metal you have to get this album. For fans of Symphony X,
Yngwie Malmsteen and such, this is a real tasty CD.
We want more!
98/100
