PECTINOIDEA

Among conchologists scallops are a popular group of bivalves due to their different shape, size, sculpture and above all its richness of colour. Nearly 500 species are occurring in polar, temperate and tropical regions and are living in shallow waters (mainly pectinids) to hadal depths (generally propeamussiids). Some species are of commercial interests and are aquacultured (Shumway, 1991).

In the past several authors worked on pectinoids (Smith, Dall, Bavay, Hertlein, Grau, and others) and more recently Waller (higher taxa) and Dijkstra (lower taxa). You will find several publications of these authors in LITERATURE.
