FIVE PEOPLE IN THE SPOTLIGHT In 2003 Maurice Heerdink contacted five famous theatre personalities, whom he admired, to portray. Aus Greidanus jr, Jenny Arean, Ellen Vogel, Willem Nijholt en John Kraaijkamp sr. The Westfries Museum will be the first to show these theatre-portraits as a part of a big exhibition of the works of Maurice Heerdink: IN THE LIGHT OF THE SPOTLIGHT
During his study at the Royal Art Academy in The Hague Maurice Heerdink became fascinated by THE DRAMA OF LIGHT.
Filmers like Pasolini, Fellini and Jarman were influenced by dramatic painters like Caravaggio. In their turn their work influenced Heerdink. Heerdink places his models in a light beam to create a highly intense image. With THE MALE PHYSIQUE lightning is of extreme importance. By using the effect of flood lightning he searches for the ultimate relief of muscles.
In the year of the exhibition of Rembrandt and Caravaggio in Amsterdam Heerdink will show for the first time his paintings of THE GREEK MYTHOLOGY.
After reaching half a century and painting the theatre portraits Heerdink began a new chapter: SELF-PORTRAITS. (see below) Not the well known pose with brush in front of a mirror, but threatening, dramatic and theatrical. In 2005 the Westfries Museum had a small Heerdink exhibition in the Prentenkabinet: VOC en VERRE VOLKEN. (VOC and Foreign Cultures) These works of the Maya culture, Indians, Asia en the VOC will be a part of this years show again.
