Workshop Muqarnas 2019

In mosques, you often see abstract decorations in an interplay of regularity and variation. You may find nice examples in Turkey and Iran, but also in Moorish Spain or Morocco. Investigation of the patterns is a fine application of mathematics and is an interesting topic for a dedicated lesson in the classroom. Muqarnas are decorative elements that, for example, fill the space above the entrance of a portal. It looks like a large niche is filled with all kinds of small niches. The goal of the workshop is to explain how students may investigate these patterns, how they can build complex architecture with a limited set of basic figures. The idea is to start drawing designs in the flat plane by placing pieces of paper next to each other like a puzzle. Next step is to realize the design using 3D printed elements.

Science Club 2019

In mosques you often see abstract decorations in an interplay of regularity and variation that you can describe with mathematics. It is therefore called geometric art. In mathematics you will learn about symmetry and geometry, you will investigate patterns and draw designs yourself with ruler and compass. In this workshop, you will see examples of Turkish and Iranian mosques. In the city of Beyşehir there is an ancient mosque built in the thirteenth century, full of geometric patterns, named is the Eşrefoğlu. You will create one of those patterns together with the entire class. You also discover that you have to pay attention to what you are drawing, because it might happen that will draw a completely different pattern than you had in mind.
