Mijn naam is Morris Hulsbosch. Ik heb deze naam al een jaar of 45. Ik ben geboren in Perth (Australie) en was op mijn 2e jaar al in Nederland. Toen ik een jaar of 8 was toen viel het mij op dat mensen het steeds over een auto hadden die de naam Morrisminor had. Later, en dan bedoel ik veel later, hoorde ik pas dat er mensen zijn die net als ik de voornaam Morris hebben. In Engeland komt het vaker voor dat de naam Morris als achternaam gebruikt wordt. Ik heb natuurlijk mijn ouders gevraagd waarom ik Morris heet en niet Jan of zo. Reden was dat zij het een mooie naam vonden en dat is het dan. En oja; ik ben trots dat ik Morris heet. Het is ook een mooie naam.

We hebben voor deze naam gekozen, omdat we het een mooie hippe naam vonden en tenminste één die je geen 20 x op de creche, peuterspeelzaal of school zult horen. Een naam die blijft hangen als je die gehoord hebt.

The name of Morris, according to Mark Antony Lower, is derived from two sources: one of native Welsh origin; the other coming from the Continent of Europe. It is variously spelled: Morys, Morrys, Moris, Morris, Morice, Morrice, Moryce, Mawrice, Maurice, etc., and is compounded with various initial expressions, as DeMont, Fitz, Clan, etc. When these latter occur and when the name is spelled Maurice, it may generally be considered of Continental and perhaps of Moorish origin, coming from Africa by way of Spain into Western Europe at an early period. "It is a well-known fact," says Lower, "that the particular species of saltation called the Morrice-dance and the several branches of magic lore were introduced into these regions many centuries since by natives of Morrocco; the professors of these arts enriching themselves by their trade, seem in some instances to have embraced Christianity and to have become the founders of eminent families. Other authorities say the name is derived from "Mawr," great or brave, and "Rhys," "Rwyce," "Rees," or "Rice," a title given to the ancient chiefs, so that the meaning of the name is "great" or "brave" "chief" or "prince," which seems to be a probable meaning. Certain it is, that the various knighted families in England bearing the name of Morris trace their ancestry to such an origin, and Morrice of Werrington and Betshanger, Morris of York, Morris of Hurst and of Pentenavent, all trace their families back to a remote period.
Morris is één van de oudste nu nog bekende dansvormen, waarvan varianten in verschillende streken van Europa zijn getraceerd. De vroegste vermeldingen dateren uit de middeleeuwen, maar daaruit blijkt dat Morris veel ouder moet zijn. Ondanks deze hoge ouderdom is Morris een zeer energieke en spectaculaire dansvorm.
De Morris wordt gedanst met zakdoeken, stokken en bellen. Algemeen neemt men aan dat het gebruik van deze attributen verweven is met oeroude mythen en symbolen. Waarschijnlijk hebben de dansen deel uitgemaakt van een groter ceremonieel, verbonden met de wedergeboorte van de natuur in de lente.
Morris is de naam van de tekenaar van de Lucky Luke stripboeken zoals "De neven Dalton" en "Lucky Luke en Phil IJzerdraad". De naam Morris is een pseudoniem (gebaseerd op de engelstalige uitspraak van zijn voornaam) van de Belg Maurice de Bevere.
