171 My given name is Tara Denea Lowry, with Pfarner added after marriage. My parents chose this name because they liked it and it fit well with my Irish maiden name. It was interesting to see all the other Tara Lowry listings...I never knew so many people shared the same name. If any other Tara Lowry's would like to write, I would love to hear from them! Tbella9@aol.comHi! My name is Terra Keim. It is pronounced like Sara with a T. I think your page is really neat. I never knew that my name meant so much. My parents just named me this because all of my sisters have names that start with T and they like the name Sara. I like it because it is different. But as I was reading your page I saw that there is a person named Tara Keim. My last name is not heard very often so I think it is amazing that somebody can have that same name!
Pegah Jenab. Dear Tara's grand father: I found your home page and thought you may want to know more about the name Tara. Tara is also a Persian (the country which is called today Iran) ancient word and name, meaning star. It's a female name. Persian language (also called Farsi) is also (like English and German) an Indo-German language. Ancient Persians (Aryans) moved to what is called today Germany and brought with themselves their ancient language and ancient words to the new homeland. You can find very similar words and names in all three languages and one of them is Star (Stern in German and Stare in Persian). The word Stare (Star) is a close family of the word Tar and Tara also meaning star! Tara as both name and word is used in ancient books found from Zarathustra (ancient Persian prophet, believing in Mazda as god) time. It makes me sad that others Persians ancient names like Sam, Mazda, Daria, Kira, Cyrus, Armin and Roxana are used today in western countries ignoring their marvelous ancient meaning and stories. I find the irish meanings of Tara also beautiful.
You can also find this name in a Persian name collection:

Tara-marie Martinez: My name is pronounced Tar-ah not mistaken for the ever so popular Tair-rah. I have not always loved my name because it always seemed no one could ever pronounce it. But the older I got the more I realized what a special name I had. It was unique I have only met one other Tar-ah. I also began to understand the meaning of it. The strength that the name held. My mother picked it for a number of reasons one for the meaning tower of strength and the other funny enough she feel in love with the movie Gone with the Wind. But she wanted it pronounced differently hence I am Tar-ah.
175 Tara Gorman: My parent's named me after the plantation in "Gone with the Wind" too! All of my father's side of the family emigrated from Ireland. My Mom and Dad thought it would be nice to give me a 100% Irish name!
Tara Kirkland from The USA: My name came from the English actress Tara King who played in the avengers in the 60's. It was only a few years ago that I learned of it's true meaning and the beautiful story of the place called Tara in Ireland where the High Kings were crowned. The Tower there was actually named after one of the High Kings wifes. He had built the tower for her to be able to look upon the beautiful countryside. When she died he named it for her and all the preceding kings were crowned there. I live in the south and get very upset at the mispronunciation of my name as Terra, I find myself correcting and telling the story my mother said when I was younger when someone said is it Tara or Terra and she said she can be a terror but it's Tara. It's a beautiful name and the most beautiful and precious gift my mother gave me a name rich with meaning and beauty from a much beloved Irish Queen.
Tara from London: I was born in 1975 and the name Tara was quite rare back then. My parents are Irish hence the name! This website has made me feel very proud of my name.
hey my name is Tara too(Tah rah). cool huh. my name used the irish term "strong tower" and the greek term "strong tower of God" but because i thought my name was boring i did a little bit of searching and found my name means "star" in hindu and i really am a goddess. thanx, your website inspired me. luv always, Tara Elan Shelton.
Tara from Australia: My father named me Tara because he thinks it is a good and very pretty name. And I have Irish heritage and I'm a tower of strength (lol).
Hi, my name is tara dawn strongosky and i was named tara because my dad chose it at the spur of the moment. i was originally supposed to be ashley or carly, but i got tara. now im really glad they named me this name because im the only tara in my school.
Hi, im Tara Lyn Millman but ever since I was little my mom and family calls me Tara Jane so thats my name. My mom was sitting in the back of a VW bug 20 some years ago and Tara just popped into her head and she said " Thats her name" Thats how I became my name.
Kathy from Arizona, USA: My daughter's name is Tara Michelle (Tara pronounced Tahra ) which I am told is the correct Irish pronunciation. I'm Irish, her dad is Moroccan and Tara was one name which worked for both. I call her Tarabelle and Taratoons. Besides being the ancient meeting place of kings in Ireland, Tahra is an old Arabic name that means clean, pure and innocent. There's also a town, a river and a mountain of Tara in the former Yugoslavia. I love the Nepalese meaning as well, "Star". Since she was born in Africa, I like the African princess idea too.
My name is Tarra Rose Hill and ironically I was named after the hill in Ireland because my mom is Irish and they are both wiccans so that hill has a lot of meaning to them. I didn't realize Tarra was such a popular name.
Tara Neil: My parents named me after the great seat of high kings, The Hill of Tara, in Ireland. I was first going to be named Tamara, but my dad didnt agree with that one. Taking off after my Irish roots, I visited the hill last summer and was more than proud. All Tara's should make this trip once in their life, after all, if it wasnt for the hill, they could have ended up a Tamara, like I was going to be!
My name is Kevin, and I live in Richmond VA. At this point in my life I've known three girls named Tara. They were all named after the manor in Gone With the Wind, but they also share another common trait. All three are the most beautiful girls I've ever met. Two of which I would consider girls of my dreams. Lame? Yes. But I find this fascinating. Oh yeah, Tara Reid looks pretty good, too.
My name is Tara Meurders from Holland. I am 3 weeks old. My parents choose this name because they liked it a lot. Later they read on your page that it is Sanskrit for star. This is very special because my sisters name (she is 5 years old) is Luna and that is Italian/Spanish for moon. Now we are the star and the moon. Sounds very romantic isn't it?
Tara Bowlin - Everyone thinks my name came for Gone With The Wind, that would be an incorrect assumption. My mother was a fan of Tara King from the TV series "The Avengers", and to add to the confusion she pronounced it like Tar (like pavement) with an "a" at the end. People are forever arguing with me about my name. I truly think she just liked being different because she named my sister Christa :)
Tara Stephanie Thompson Holt from Bismarck, ND -USA: My father selected the name from a very large volume of names. He wanted something unique that started with the letter "T". An elderly nun assisted him shortly after I was born. I didn't like my name growing up. Nobody seemed to be able to spell it, and it seemed there was always a discrepancy in spelling or pronunciation. I like it now, and at 55, am the oldest "Tara" I know.
190 My name is Tara Webb. I am from London. My Mum named me Tara because she loved the film Gone with the Wind. When I was little I hadn't heard of anyone called Tara then when I was seven I had another girl named Tara in my class at school. Also my best friend's brother's girlfriend is also called Tara.
There is another Tara Webb on Tara-page 2 (number 57) and Tara-page 6 (number 255).
Tara S. Polinsky from Pennsylvania-USA: I saw your page on the Web about Taras and how they got their names. I don't know if you're still compiling answers, but my mother was a fan of the soap opera "All My Children" in the 1970s. There was a character on there named Tara Martin, and she fell in the love with the name.
Tara Lynne West from White Plains, NY - USA: I was born in 1971 and was almost named Jodi. At the last minute, after getting the idea from "All My Children," my mom decided on Tara (rhyming with Sara). Not so thrilled with the soap opera connection, I'm very happy to learn about the association with Buddhism. As for my middle name, my parents had considered Lee, but decided it sounded too much like Sara Lee and opted for Lynne instead.
Hey, Im Tara from The US- I was named Tara just because my parents thought it was a pretty name, and that it is an Irish name and I am part Irish. I know that it is pretty boring and I wish that I could have a better reason behind my name LoL :)
Tara Anne Grimason (now Wells): my name came from a few things- my parents wanted a name that started with a T and that you couldn't make a nickname out of. As for the origin- I love to tell people it's because I'm part Irish, but the absolute truth is my mom has watched All My Children forever. I'm 27-almost 28- probably like most of the Tara's named from the soap. Tah-ra. (like 'at") Some people say "Terra" which is only acceptable if you literally cannot pronounce it right, I like the way the people in Ireland say it- Tahr-a. I love that but it sounds silly coming from me. Long live the Taras and Long May we Rule!
Tara Bicker from The United Kingdom: I was called Tara because my dad liked the name from the Avengers TV show. ( My mum wanted to call me Nicola I'm glad dad won cos I don't think I'm a Nicola!) I hated my name when I was small, but I love it now. Especially because it means star in sanksrit, it's where ancient Kings were crowned in Ireland and it's an Asian goddess of mercy and compassion.
My name is Tara Danielle Urso. I dont know why my parents named me Tara although i am sure it was NOT because of gone with the wind :) I actually like my middle name a lot better.
Sumi Goel: In India girls are named Tara, which is a beautiful name and means a Star. I had a classmate with this name. She was a tall, athletic girl and I used to think that the name suits her perfectly.
My name is Tara Nova Webb. Pronounced Tah-rah, my parents chose the name not only because of the Irish Hill of Kings, but also because Tara is the Tibetan bodhisattva (enlightened being who remained on earth) of compassion. Tara is primarily worshipped in Tibet and Nepal in the context of Northern Buddhism. Also known as "she who saves" or "she who helps cross", Tara is one of the bodhisattva that helps guide people towards enlightenment.
Tara Flood: This is such an awesome web-site, maybe I am partial because I too am a Tara. Like many of you, I was also named after "Gone with the Wind" - when I was younger, I used to LOVE watching that movie because it was the only time I would ever hear my name. Not to mention how sad I was when we would go on vacation and my name would be the only one they didn't have on monogrammed souvenirs. Times they are changing though and as I can see by this web-site there are many more of us out there now. To all my Tara sisters, I wish you peace and happiness today and always.
200 Tara: My parents chose my name because it is a goddess in Hindu and buddhic cultures--Tara the white goddess. Plus we are Irish and it is a strong name.
My name is Tara Renee Velasco. My maiden name is Tara Taylor. I have always been interested in my name and what it means. It is kind of funny as I was named after the tower in Ireland. And I turned out to be 6'1". My mom gets a kick out of it when she tells the story. I love my name. But I dislike it when my name is pronounced wrong.
Hello, I am Tara Lee Gorman. My father and his side was full Irish, so he wanted me to have a proper Irish name. I was born in 1975 and my mother told me it was a very rare name back then. What a neat website, I love it!!
My name is Tara Christine Lowe. It is pronounced Tear-uh (not TAR-uh). And just like most other people, my mom gave me the name after the plantation in Gone With the Wind. I like my name, not that many people have it.
My name is Tara Dawn Daggy, from Atlanta, Georgia USA. My mother told me she saw the name "Tara" in a news article back in the 60's. It was about a prince with the name "Tara". She said she thought it would make a great name for a girl. She liked the fact that it wasn't a very common name (back then) and that it was a little different than the typical girl names. Then a few years later when she was pregnant with me (1971), she had forgotten all about the name, and was going to name me Tammy until another relative used it, and then she remembered the article and how much she liked the name "Tara". And well, the rest is history :-)
My name is Tara Lynne McKay, my parents named me that because their neighbors daughter was named Tara and they loved it soo much!
Hi. My name is Tara. tarr-ah. My parents chose the name because they thought it was a beautiful and powerful name. My Dad used to tell me that he heard many different meanings but the one he liked most was "the goddess of high craggy places" Has anyone else ever heard of this definition? I have struggled with the pronunciation of my name ever since I can remember, but I have come to terms with it. I usually tell people a couple times and if they can't get it, well then I am terra . I guess I have gotten tired of correcting people.
I am Tara Lisa Young and live in California. My dad loved "Gone with the Wind" .. just like other ladies on the list. It's kind of messed up - being Black and named afer a plantation! Just terrible. But I love the name. It's unique. Been to Ireland too where some kings were declared on a hill named Tara. I am also Irish. They also liked to say (in their brogue) "ah you have a fine Irish name".
Tara Mulholland (from the Irish meaning 'a hill') - I'm from Northern Ireland, my parents chose my name as they thought it was beautiful and unusual. When I was a child I had a lot of (lovely - not) people inform me that they or their grandparents had a dog called Tara. Ironically much as I hated the name in my formative years I now love it, and feel it's a name very much for a free spirit with inner strength.
210 Hi, my name is Tara Daniel. I am from Alabama. I was given this name because of my mothers love of Gone with the wind.
