211 Tara Currence from Arkansas, USA: I was born in 1970. My mom was a soap opera junkie, and I was named after a popular character,Tara, from All My Children. I've had many "nicknames" throughout the years, but the most memorable ones are : Holy Tara (terror), Tarabull (terrible), and A Rat (which is tara backwards).

My name is (or was before marriage) Tara Ashley Cooper. Needless to say its one of the most southern names I have heard of. Yes, my mother was a Gone with the Wind lover and name came from the plantation and the insectiuos romance of Scarlett and Ashley. Cooper as you have it is a family name there was no way to get past that one.

Tara Bannister: I was called Tara (as in Tar-rah) because it means “Tower of strength” in Irish, and also has affiliations with the Maori language. In further research of the name, I have discovered that Tara is a Nepalese God, means “Star” in Sanskrit, and also means “The Saving Knowledge” in Tibetan Buddhism. Pretty Cool eh!

Tara Lynn Corona - California, USA: My name is also Tara (pronounced Terra). My mom wanted to name me after my Godmother, whose name is Terri, but didn’t want the name to be exactly the same. The nurse in the hospital suggested to my mom, how about Tara, like in Gone With the Wind. My mom liked it and decided it was the perfect name for me. Like the other people named Tara on your website, I grew up being the only Tara I knew. I like having a unique and beautiful name.

My name is Tara Ashlie King, from Rockingham, Western Australia: My name comes neither from the sitcom "the avengers" nor from "gone with the wind"- and i'm also not irish........ when my parents were deciding on a name to give me they thought long and hard about a name that australians couldn't shorten nor put a Y on the end of- which is what tends to happen to every name under the sun in australia... jessica becomes jessy, daniel becomes danny, cassandra becomes cassy, so you can see where they were coming from! My dad loved the name Tara for its uniqueness, originality, personality and sheer beauty- so it was settled. OH and to all those Tara's out there who dislike being called "Tar-a", i say get over it, that's how we prenounce it in australia- that's how i've always known it and that's how i like it to be said, i'm not "tear-a" i'm "TAR-A" !!!

A third Tara O'Connor, from England! Pronounced TAR-RUH :) My australian aunt was visiting my mum in hospital & mentioned a friend of hers had just had 2 twin girls, one named Tara. It stuck :) Two other Tara O´Connors -number 108 and 135 on Tarapage 3.

Tara Hackney from Chapel Hill, NC: I was trying to google my name today and ran across your site. My mother named me Tara after someone on a soap opera. The ironic thing was that in the soap opera Erica was my worst enemy but in reality I had a best friend named Erica. I get the Gone With the Wind pitch a lot. I have never seen the movie but am looking forward to checking it out. My middle name is Tennille from Toni Tennille. The Captain and Tennille. Muskrat Love. (Tara pronounced Terra ;) )

Hi, I am Tara Lynn Walker. I was born in 1955. I live in Kansas. I did not know of another Tara untill I was in college. I am a high school art teacher and I've had two students named Tara over the years. My mother got my name from Gone With the Wind. I have always loved my name and been proud of it. I have some pieces of Tara Chine, and silverware from Reed and Barton. I still run across the name very rarely.

My name is Tara Nicole Moore-Steinman, I'm from Corona, CA USA. I came upon your site researching Tara, Ireland. My name is pronounced Tah-rah and it was chosen by my fathers ex-wife and was supposed to mean back to earth, though I have never found that definition. Though I have found Tower, Star, and of course after the Goddess.

My name is Tara York - and like many of the girls on here, my mom loved the name Tara from Gone with the Wind. She said she didn't know any Tara's at that time, but I went to school: 5! I was happy to find this site though! I have a better appreciation of my name!

Tara Baker-Miles (UK): My father told me he chose the name Tara because it was where the kings met in Ireland and is therefore a name of power (hey, anything to get on in life, right?) but my mother says he was probably influenced by The Avengers character Tara King … Anyway, it’s pronounced Ta-ra (and I took a lot of stick at school from people singing ta-ra-ra-bumdy-ay which I hated) but I also love the Te-ra pronunciation and never bother to correct people if they get it wrong. I have only ever met two other Tara’s so it’s great to know there are many, many more of us out there!

Hi my name is Tara Stowe. I am writing because a friend of mine told me my name means star and I had never heard of that so I decided to do a little research to see all the different meanings of my name. I have always loved my name. I am one who appreciates simple elegance and that is exactly what the name tara is to me. It is short and easy to say, but yet there is still the underlying uniqueness and beauty. My mother named me Tara as for many because she loved "Gone With the Wind." I was also named after a close friend of hers who I still know today. I love your web page!!! I am so glad I took the time to discover some of the true meanings of the name Tara. I love to travel so maybe I will go to Ireland some day and see Tara Hill.

Hi, my name is Tarah (pronounced like Sarah), my middle name is Beth. I am 16 and I love my name. I also like all the different special meanings that it has.

Hi! My name is Tara Robison. I asked my mom how she picked out my name, and said she just found my name in a baby book and liked it.

225 Hi there! My given name is Tara Marie Keim. I was surprised to see another Tara Keim (Tara-page 1, number 40) and a Tara Marie (Tara-page 4, number 141) on your site! So cool. I was born in 1970. No one knew how to pronounce my name in school. At the time it was still unusual. My mother said she got the name out of a Seventeen Magazine. She's never even seen Gone With the Wind! If I had a nickel for every time someone asked me that one!!!!! ;)

Hi. My name is tara marie. Pronounc.d tar-a. I was given the name because my grandmas name was octavia marie. They called her tavia so i guess my parents thought it was close to that. I find it funny that it means star because thats my nickname at work.

My name is tara, I am from the uk. I was named tara because when my dad went to ireland with his parents when he was a child he heard the name and said when he had a little girl he wanted to call her tara because it was such a beautiful name and my mum didnt have a choice.

Tara Hughes, London, UK: My parents are both from the west of Ireland and my mum used to babysit a little girl called Tara, when she decided she would call me the same! I always knew of the name's Irish meanings but also really like the sanskit meaning of 'star'. My French teacher once told me that 'Tara' also means 'Moonbeam' in Hinduism. (though i've not heard that since!?) I've always pronounced it TAR - RA although I really like the softer Irish sound of TAH - RUH. I always thought the name to be rare as known few other Tara's in my time but this website has proved me wrong! I always hated my name when I was younger because I could never find souvenir pens, badges and mugs etc with my name, (and also everyones dog seemed to share the name!!) but now I have learnt of its beautiful and magical meanings, I rather like it!

Tara Pitten from england- my names tara because it was my great-grandmar's death wish kinda wired.

My name is Tara Marie Warriner and I am from Kentucky (USA). My mother was very close to my father's son (her stepson) who was 16 when she was pregnant with me. She decided that she was going to name me after him, his name is Terry. If I had been a boy my name was to be Terry also. At first I didn't like my name, (pronounced Teh-rah) but over the years I have grown to like it and appreciate how unique it is. I have even named my daughter after me, her name is Taryn.

Hi. My name is Tara. Duh. Ok. Anyways, My mommy said she named me Tara was because she said she liked the movie Gone With the wind but i didnt want her to say that because almost everybody else on the Tara Page said it was from the movie gone with the wind.I was sooo mad when she said that.

My name is Tara Moore (soon to be Littlejohn) and my mother named me after the All My Children character Tara Martin. At the time, no one in my small hometown had the name. After my baby picture and name appeared in the local newspaper, everyone seemed to grab my short yet beautiful first name!

Hello! My name is also Tara. I´m Tara Gomez, my father likes the name because I have two sisters and their names are Mara and Sara, so he decided to name me Tara because he likes the terminations with "ara". My name is not so comon in Mexico, but it is good because I´m the only one that has this name in my town. I love my name!!!

Just a browser (from South Africa): I was now on you web site now, try to find the meaning of tara. I was please to see other people called Tara. Excellent name choice on your grandfathers side. Just to let you know I am going to keep my unborn daughter's name Tara. Because tara means Star, and she is going to be my star. It also means Saviouress, the Liberator. This second meaning can be built on. It's actual amazing the meaning. A whole religion is based on this meaning.

Hi. My name is Tara Farrar and I am 28 years old. I live in Orlando, Florida, USA. My mom fell in love with the name when she first saw Gone With the Wind. I was her first daughter so she decided to name me after the movie. I've the movie but have been very fascinated with the meaning of Tara.

Tara Alexandra Young from Canada: Interesting to see so many people named after Gone With the Wind. My parents just thought I looked like a Tara at birth. I was a very serious looking infant and Tara is kind of a no nonsense no frills name, so Tara I am!

My parents named me Tara because I have a very Italian last name and they loved the sound of a traditional Irish first name with my last name. Very unoriginally my parents first heard the name in Gone With The Wind. The deciding factor though was the beauty of the name itself!

My name is Tara Lavonn Phillips and my mother named me after the plantation on "Gone with the wind". I am from Florence Alabama and I´m 25 years old and I´m very glad to see so many others with my name.

Hello there, my name is Tara. I got my name like many others on this page. My mother, when a little girl, was taken to a moive plex to see the moive gone with the wind...she liked the plantation so much, thought it so beautiful that she wanted one of her children to be named Tara...Though to make the name even more unique they added a " R " My name is Tarra Lenai ( pronounced Terra..) Thank you for the information on the site, I hadnt known that the name " tara " meant so many things in so many different cultures...I think I like my name even more now...

Hi there, my name is Tara Ni Dhuinn, I am from Dublin in Ireland. My surname is the Gaelic for Dunne and I am fluent in both English and Gaelic (or Gaeilge as we say it). My Mam chose to call me Tara because she loves Irish names, yet she wanted one that wasn't too common. I don´t know many Tara's, and I love my name so much. I'd hate to have an extremely common name. Although after I came upon this website I realised there are a lot more Tara's than I'd thought. Hi to all you other Tara's. Go raibh maith agaibh as an website seo a thosu, is rud maith e bheith abalta teangmhail le daoine eile leis an ainm ceanna, SLAN< Tara Ni Dhuinn xxxxx

Tara Elizabeth Rojas, 6 years old, from Houston, Texas: My Mommy named me Tara because she loved the movie Gone With The Wind and the beautiful plantation "Tara".

Tara B.: Hello there. I stumbled across your site (for obvious reasons) and I figured I'd share with you the story of how I became Tara. It's short really, just that my grandmother being 100% irish (I am Irish, Russian, Bulgarian, and Romanian) wanted the last of her grandchildren to have 'a nice Irish name.' Well, I'm not the last, but I was the last she lived to see. Sad, really. My mother, said, "A nice Irish name...? Like what?" and my grandmother replied, "Name her Tara... I've always loved that name." And so, here I am. Tara. I VERY often get asked if I'm named for Gone with the Wind, but I'm not, though I must say I do love the book anyhow. Hehehehee. So there you have it, the story of my Tara-ness.

Tara Mulholland from Ohio: I got the name Tara because my father used to date a girl in High School who he says was very beautiful. He said he loved the name and my mother let him pick it out. My mom, Theresa, and everyone else think I was named after the movie "Gone With The Wind". My dad shared this with me after my parents divorced....Neat huh! I was named after nothing important at all...

My name is Tara Jo - my Mom said she read that is was a derivitive of Teresa which is her name. Jo is also my mothers middle name. I had a customer of mine tell me once that the meaning of my name meant to "shepperd people over troubled waters" and I was googling it which led me to this site. Also in my googling I found that "Tara" had a lot of meanings, I even found a site that said it meant "evil" but could not find a language in which it was supposed to come from. I found a lot of meanings and almost all of them were very special which makes me proud of my name.

My name is Tara Lee Schmidt (but I just got married, so now it's Boettcher - like Fletcher with a B). From the USA. My first name is said Tar-a. Like many others on this site, I don't care for it when it's mispronounced. I used to be the only girl with my name in school, and then I moved to Boston (and there were 3 others in the same class with the name! I think 2 said Ter-a and there were 3 others in the same class with the name! I think 2 said Ter-a and 1 Tar-a), and the accent here makes it difficult, if not impossible, for some to say it Tar-a no matter how hard I work with them! So, if I don't see them a lot, I leave it alone. (It does grate on me though, and I wonder where the pronunciation came from that is in the movie "Gone With the Wind"? Or that popular soap? Does anyone know?) I was named after the character on the TV show "The Avengers", Tara King. And they say it Tar-a on the show. In fact, every person I've met from overseas, or while visiting foreign countries, have all said Tar-a, except the USA. So, I treat the name as two separate names. Always I ask Tara's: Tar-a or Ter-a? And perhaps together, we can all be sensitive to the way people say their names! (Tara's and others.) Merry or Mary? Pretty subtle difference!

246 My name is Tara Griffin . I'm 14 years old and I wanted to know if there were any other girls with the name Tara GRIFFIN, just out of interest. I would like to find out if people with the exact same name share similar qualities and talents and if their lives and interests could somehow relate to each other. As I was born under the Taurus sign with dark eyes, dark hair and olive skin, my Mother chose the name Tara for me because she felt it would reflect the strength she saw in me even at birth. She said that the strength was a inner beauty in which others could take refuge" place of safety". She has since birth brought me up to be very strong and confident. My Dad was a Wilbert Smith fan and my name as well as my sisters "Courtney" is found in his books. My stubborn streak comes from my Taurian star sign or so my mom says I think thats just part of my character.

In the meantime there is another Tara Griffin indeed on Tarapage 7: number 262.

Tara Martin from Iowa-USA: My name is also Tara. Growing up I didn't really think anything about my name good or bad, but now as an adult I love it. It is feminine yet unusual. I have to admit my parents named me after the movie. But my character so fits some of the other meanings from additional origins other than Irish that I have heard. I have not named either of my daughters Tara. But have given them strong names that I hope they will love as adults as much as I love my name. I loved reading all of your postings about the name.

Dustin: my sisters name is tara. Our mother just liked the name. She was almost named rachael though.

My name is Tara Natasia Velasco. My mom named me that because she loved the movie Gone with the Wind and their plantation was called Tara. I love my name I think it is unique. It's simple yet beautiful. I had an Irish lady tell me a wonderful story of how the name came about and I had one of my Doctors tell me my name means star in his language which I loved so much.

250 I came across your website the other evening whilst looking for how many couples were named Tara and Stephen as i am due to be married in September. My current name is Tara Susan Elizabeth Kirkland, and i live in Stoke on Trent, England. My parents gave me this name because my dad liked.....yes you've guessed it Tara King from the TV program "The Avengers", and my mum accepted it because she wanted a name that could not be shortened at school, but my school friends and i managed that and everyone called me Taz. A doctor of mine Dr Chopra once informed me it meant Star, and i've also heard it means Tiger but i've never come across evidence of this. I love my name because when i was born in 1970 it was very rare, and still is to some degree. (except people in the UK seem to have taken to naming there dogs this, usually alsations, dobermans or rottweilers. I don't know what that says about the name???!!). It also has some wonderful meanings. My married name will be Tara Christey! i wonder if there are any others out there?

Hi, I just visited your site on the name Tara! My name is Tara Elizabeth Watts, I am from Georgia, in the U.S.A. My mother named me after the plantation in "Gone With The Wind", so it is pronounced like the way they say it, NOT like tar from the road with an a, I have had several people try to tell me I mispronounce it but i correct them by letting them know my name is from "Gone With The Wind". I don't mind other ways of saying it, I just say it like I was taught to say it. My middle name is Elizabeth after my grandmother. Her name is Sara Elizabeth, so it is similiar but different. I have always really liked my name but..........., my twinsister is named Terri Ann, she didn't like that she knew so many boys named Terry in school but not many girls with that name. And funny enough my husbands name is also Terry, with a Y : ). Maybe we will find a Terri Page.

Hi, I'm Tara Cooper from Redding, California. My mother chose my name because we had a neighbour, Taryn, and she liked the name. Last year, I was able to actually go to the Hill of Tara in Ireland. It was beautiful there. Imagine green, grassy, rolling hills with the occasional ancient burial mound and stone monument with gaelic etchings. Tara in Gaelic is Teamhair.

My name is Tara Louise Ryan, Dubbo Australia , yes I know how common. My mother was another one of those people who watched Gone with the Wind and fell in love with the name.

My name is Tara Nicole Kelly. (from Wisconsin-USA.) My dad's mother is named "Teresita", so they named me after her, pronouncing my name as "Tera." In gradeschool, however, I started pronouncing my name as "Tah-ra" when it came to introductions, so that has been my name ever since. Tara has a beautiful website.

255 Hi, my name is Tara Lee Webb. I'm an Australian living in New Zealand, my mum named me Tara after a character in an Australian movie called "return to eden", about a woman who got her face mauled by a crocodile and had surgery and became a model and changed her name Tara. She always hated anyone who would suggest she would name her daughter after a house.
