Ko van Huissteden teaches us how to make a so called "lacquer peel". It demands a lot of precise work in the field but, in the end, is nothing more than sand and clay stuck to a piece of wood. The reason we're still making these lacquer peels is that is gives us the opportunity to get a close look at the sedimentary structures when we're back at the university.
