A part of the fieldwork was a visit to the brown coal museum in the village of Knappenrode, that gave us an impression of the history of mining in former East-Germany. The exposition contains maps of the mines, models of the machines you've seen in the first slides of this show, fossils and chrystals that were found in the mines and (as you can see) trucks that brought workers to the mines.

We also learned a bit about former climate research in the mines.
