Saturday, 17th of May 1997:    Amsterdam - Calais

We departed from Amsterdam around 8.00 AM and drove to northern France. In the afternoon, one of our stops here was in the coastal plain near Calais and Dunkerque, at an altitude of 50 centimeters above sea-level. By hand-drilling (a tough job) we collected sediments that are deposited by the sea. These marine sediments are called "Deposits of Calais" and "Deposits of Dunkerque". Layers of peat are created between these marine sediments. The deposition of the sediments started 5000 years ago.
