This picture is taken in a small open cast mine near the villlage of "Vannoz". It shows layers of sand and gravel that were deposited by a large sandur. Sandurs (also known as outwash plains) are created by sediment and debris that is deposited or "washed out" by meltwater streams running from the front of glaciers. Remarkable is the rectangular shaped block of sand in the middle of the picture. It is about 50 centimeters long and 40 centimeters wide and was transported by water to this site as a frozen chunk of soil.
