Friday, 27th of August 1999:    Akureyri - Tjörnes - Myvatn

After a delicious breakfast, with lots of salmon, we continued our trip. During a short stop at a gas station we were able to visit the harbour of "Húsavík", before driving to the peninsula "Tjörnes". An hour or two later we arrived at the 90 m deep, oxbow-shaped canyon "Asbyrgi".

Icelandic myths and saga tell us "Asbyrgi" was formed by a footprint of Sleipnir, the horse of the ancient German god Odin. Geologists instead tell us it was cut by a very large waterfall, a few thousand years ago. It can be compared with the oxbow-shaped canyon, cut by the Niagara-falls at the American-Canadian border.
