The geothermal field "Leirhnjúkur", in the Krafla-volcanic system. The area is characterised by boiling mud-bogs and so called solfatoras. Water vapour containing sulfur escapes from these solfatoras, spreading a scent like rotting eggs. Mineral deposits create a variety of colors: blue for pyrite and yellow for sulfur. "Leirhnjúkur" is a dangerous area. Walking next to the path is strictly prohibited because the crust is very thin. People could fall through the crust, getting severely burned. The white smoke in the background is water vapour coming from a geothermal powerplant in the Krafla-system. Icelandic scientists try to produce electricity out of geothermal energy but frequent earthquakes cause a lot of problems.
