Wednesday, 25th of August 1999: Flight to IcelandSchiphol Amsterdam Airport, half past one in the afternoon. An Icelandair Boeing 737 takes of heading for Iceland. After nearly three hours flying the southern coast of Iceland is in sight. We have a clear view on the glacier lake called "Jökulsárlon" and the glaciers called "Öræfajökull" and "Breidamerkurjökull" (move mouse over picture), both outlet-glaciers of the ice cap "Vatnajökull". This "Vatnajökull" is the third large ice cap in the world, after Antarctica and Greenland. It is Europe's largest ice cap because Greenland, although belonging to Denmark, is regarded as a part of the American continent. Shortly after I took this picture, we could only see a gray cloud-cover below us. The next place in Iceland we saw out of the plane was a rainy airport "Kéflavík".
