Yeah!
That's probably how Rory Culkin would respond if you asked him if enjoys acting. As the youngest acting family member he has ignited his career at an enormous rate. After the movie "Signs" it was clear that people knew who he was. He has earned himself a respectable record of performances and got to be known as "The Cute Culkin".
All that attention can be like an amphetamine or it can be as poision. For a 13 year old it can be quite a challenge to deal with. Luckily he's from a family that has experience in this sort of thing and Rory can rely on his brothers Macaulay and Kieran to help him through this thrilling adventure.
One thing is for sure, Rory has become a popular teenager. The interest towards Rory has grown extensively as was clearly noticeable in the responses I got towards the website. Many guestbook entries and eMails were submitted and it became clear to me that Rory has this magical spell that drives his fans to rave on his behalf. Ranging from love struck to envy, its quite an experience I can tell you.
I remember seeing the movie "You Can Count On Me" and have to admit that for a moment it was like I was seeing Macaulay, there was a definite resemblance. Not even so much his looks, but the flair in the way he acted. For a moment it was like "Oh my God", but quickly it turned around into seeing an act with an entirely different angle. It became clear to me that Rory had his own stuff, and that he knew what to do with it. I guess its just the association, the recognition that puts you off.
Rory has the talent to play in depth character roles that go beyond the scope of just entertainment. I guess that's what must have let to the choice of having him play the role of Morgan Hess in the movie "Signs". Be aware that this was not just a quick decision, many (over 100) had been screened and it was only after an exhaustive selection process that Rory was chosen to play the part. The right choice if you ask me. Playing the part must have been challenging with all the combined emotions, but the result was great.
One of the strong emotional moments in the movie was the Diner scene. First off was Abigail Breslin (playing the younger sister to Rory) who did her part and performed the crying scene in one take. Touched by this display of emotions, Rory was able to do his emotional dialog in only 2 takes. As Rory said "She started crying and I didn't know she could do that", " I was crying cause I saw her crying, it was so sad". Another challenging scene was the asthmatic attack. Rory consulted professionals on how to breathe and his act came across very convincing. A scary experience if you ask me, since you kind of have to hyperventilate yourself, getting close to what it really feels like when you are gasping for air.
The movie "Signs" is a suspense story with an interesting twist. Even though the subject of the movie involves aliens, it is not a high tech science fiction movie. Instead it has a moderate use of special effects. Still it did require Rory to be suspended by wires and doing some blue screen shots.
His charging performance didn't go unnoticed. It has been praised by the media coverage and it got him nominated for the "Young Artist Award" for "Best performance in a feature film - Leading Young Actor". Rory enjoyed working with M. Night Shyamalan. At first he was a little disappointed that Mark Ruffalo (co-star from "You Can Count On Me") had to pass on the part, but he ended up having a good time hanging around with Joaquin Phoenix. Shooting started right after September 11th, which in a sense set a special atmosphere, but also one of strong motivation to make this movie work.
Even after having played the part, Rory himself got 'scared' when watching the movie "Signs". He is not a disbeliever of extraterrestrials, but he doesn't think they would be hostile. "I don't think they want to hurt us, or attack for any reason at all. They'd just leave us alone." Sometimes I wonder if there is a resemblance between fans and extraterrestrials ;)
After the movie "Signs" Rory also played the young Kieran in "Igby Goes Down" and his most recent project after that was the movie "It runs in the Family" that got released last month. Rory plays the part of Eli Gromberg, the youngest son of this highly successful New York family. The main challenge in this family is to coexist among themselves. The film features three generations of the Grombergs, as it does as well for the Douglas family that plays the main cast. Rory plays a reserved little boy who's main concern is to get more allowance. The dysfunctional family ties brings laughter and tears to the story and their relationships only survive because they are attached by blood.
The movie "It Runs in the Family" was released to the general public (USA) on April 25th this year and it had a special screening earlier that month in LA (April 7). The movie received mixed responses and might not be the success they hoped for. The title of the movie has been changing many times and finally ended up being "It runs in the Family", which I find myself very confusing, because of the 1994 movie "My Summer Story" that ended up with the same title "It runs in the Family". This movie features Kieran Culkin and Christian Culkin.
Besides acting Rory also enjoys to play music, specifically the drums. "I want to be an actor, but it's always good to know how to play an instrument, and I really like the drums." In a sense Rory has been in the business for about 10 years now, that is if you count him playing the part of the young Richie Rich, but of course it started for real when he got to play the part of Rudy in "You Can Count On Me". I have great expectations for Rory in the future.

On the Roll
Whether he's a Party Monster or a an innocent young Lawyer, Macaulay Culkin has got things on the roll and is enjoying it as he goes along. The start of his adult career is evident by now, and people have seen the new style and acknowledge it. A fresh start with a lot of potential.
In the past two years Macaulay has already done 3 movies and recently had a guest performance in the NBC's Emmy Award-winning show "Will & Grace". In all, the media coverage has placed him in a new spotlight away from his childhood actor image, saluting his acting ability. In the past his acting experience had become a burden for him, now a days he very much enjoys doing it.
In his recent TV performance, doing the episode "May divorce be with you" for the "Will & Grace" series, he plays Jason Towne, a goofy, seemingly immature lawyer that needs to take on Will (Eric McCormack) in a divorce case. Its enjoyable to see, especially since he comes across so naturally. This was Macaulays network series debut as an actor, but he also participated in the series "Fraisier" back in December 1994 when he did the voice of Elliot, a salesman with a high-pitched voice. The episode of "Will & Grace" aired on the 1st of May this year. The episode was postponed for 40 minutes as president Bush held his speech on the "US Victory in Iraq", luckily they didn't cancel the show. If you want to get a taste of what it was like do check out the preview clip (in the right column further down).
After a long time the moment is finally coming close. Strand Releasing acquired the US theatrical rights for the movie "Party Monster" and it is now expected for release in the US after the summer. Earlier this year it was shown at Sundance (Utah, US) and the Berlinale (Berlin, Germany). The following post production process to optimize the film and to print it on 35 mm are nearing completion. After summer a limited release of the movie is planned for New York, LA and Chicago on September 5 this year.
The movie is quite an extravagant display of the bi-sexual / gay scene surrounding the club kids party zone as orchestrated by Michael Alig. It will probably cause a severe shock to those who will go see this movie to witness the return of their cute Macaulay. To that sense Macaulay was the right person to play the role of Alig. His image and looks turn Michael into an angelic Monster. For let it be clear that this movie touches on the bizarre story of the life and horrific crimes of Michael Alig.
The story starts out with good intentions when Michael and his band "the club kids" create a party scene for those who were seen as the rejects, but in due course alcohol and drugs washed away the fantasy and pulled them under. Michael had to go into extremes to stay on the edge, until the point was reached were reality and fantasy were no longer distinguishable. He killed his drug dealer (Angel Melendez) and the party was over. He fled with Glitsie, who stuck by him out of childlike devotion. She helped him through these racked times on expense of her own life (due to a drug overdose). The whole experience hunted Alig in his dreams and his arrest was the beginning of a closure, taking a weight off his shoulder.
As you can imagine, not an easy part to play this bi-sexual flamboyant character. He had to be transferred into a look in which most of you wouldn't recognize him. Wearing provocative sexy outfits, loads of make up, put on a 'different' voice and get in touch with a feminine side. These extremities are something most people are not used to, however for some, like Marilyn Manson who plays the amusing wacked-out friend Christina, this is not so estranged, as illustrated by the fact that on occasion he arrived on the set already wearing his make-up.
Macaulay took his role seriously and among other things prepared himself by visiting Michael Alig in prison. Which on itself was quite an experience since he had never been to a prison before. Michael's best friend James st James is played by Seth Green. Together with Macaulay they had the leading performance and took on the challenge of displaying these characters without derailing into a parody. They had a lot of fun diving into this absurd world and became good friends in the process. Seth talking about Macaulay:
"He is just going to blow you guys away. He is one of the most tremendously impressive individuals, both personally and professionally. He's really got it together"
In real life Macaulay is not party animal at all. Of course he does go out, but in his case when he attends a major party, the next day it is in every newspaper. Macaualy doesn't deny being a smoker, but he does deny the rumor that has plans to marry Mila Kunis. She is a good friend, but he is not ready for another marriage.
