Summer has been great. Here in Europe we have had some extreme temperatures and not just for a week or so.
I must admit to have enjoyed that period and did not spend much time on the internet. Then again, that's what summer is for, go on vacation and have a good time! Besides, way to hot to be inside (no aricondition!)
I hope you all had a great summer too. You must be longing for some updates on the Culkins by now.
The topics in this issue include the upcoming releases of Macaulay's new movies and Rory's new movie projects.
Also in June I've been to London to see the special preview screening of "Igby goes down" with Kieran, so I'll give you some insides on that one.
Then of course we are right in the middle of the birthday season! Last month Rory (and myself ;), this month Macaulay and next month Kieran. My sincere congratulations to all of them.
As allways if YOU have something to tell about or found out some news, please do contact me. Your input is very much appreciated.
For their help regarding this issue I like to thank: Chris, Sarah, Dave, Rena, Aurora, Regina, Anatholy, and Candy.

As Kieran mentioned during the special screening preview of "Igby goes down", Rory is very active in movies at the moment. Kieran said "I can't keep up with him, he's doing like 3 movies at the same time".
One of his new movies is "Mean Creek", a story on a group of 6 teenagers who decide to get back at the school bully, but their plan inadvertently back fires and he gets killed. A tragic mistake for which they will have to face the moral and legal consequences, an event that changed their lives forever. The story was shot in July at the Clackamas River in the vicinity of Estacata, Oregon. Rory Culkin is part of a great young cast that includes names such as Carly Schroeder and Trevor Morgan. It's written and directed by Jacob Aaron Estes who won the prestigious "Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting" award for this movie script. The movie is produced by Whitewater Films, using a modest budget of $500.000. Its release is scheduled for January 15, 2004.
Another movie that will feature Rory is "In Control of all Things", an emotional thriller on a police detective, Matt Parish (Justin Chambers) and his son Johnny Parish (Rory Culkin). The story is related to the Zodiac Killer case in the San Francisco bay area that occurred in the end of the year 1960. The movie focuses on the impact of these crimes onto the victims and their families. The story is driven by the obsession of Matt Parish to solve the case, in which he endangers his own family. The script is based on real life facts that were derived from media accounts & police reports. It was written by the brothers Bulkely & Bulkley (who choose to spell their last names different), and is also directed by one of them (Alexander Bulkley). The movie is produced by Shadow Machine Films and was filmed at various locations in California. Its release is expected for next year (2004).
A third movie title "Lyme Life" has been brought to my attention, however I have found no supporting facts at this time to back this up, but I'll keep you posted on any news on this matter. Anyway, we will have lots to look forward too!

Igby, Digby, Rigby, Jason Slocumb
After the successful release of "Igby goes down" in the US and Canada the movie can now also been seen in the European movie theatres. Over the past months the "uncut" version has been released in different countries throughout Europe, including the UK, where the movie was introduced with a special screening preview in the Covent Garden Odeon Theatre.
I was in the lucky circumstances to be able to attend this special screening preview, including the Q&A session that followed. It was al short notice for me, but I managed to free up the time and happily accepted the free ticket that was offered to me (thank you Gary). In a sense it was almost like a business trip, being a reporter that flies in on the day itself and leaving the morning after. Actually a shame, as London is a very enjoyable city to be in, but it was the only time available to me.
Even though it may sound like a rushed trip, it didn't feel that way and I enjoyed it very much. The movie "Igby goes down" is really worth seeing. Aside from the interesting story line, the confrontations in Igby's life are really amusing and were acted out really believable. The story was very powerful and I was emotionally still in the movie when it ended and the chairs for the Q&A session were positioned on the stage. A blue curtain closed in front of the Silver screen and in the dim lights the chairs awaited the arrival of the 2 actors and the director. Shortly after Jeff and Kieran could be seen in the lighted stage alley that lead into the theatre. A girl who had to leave for a bathroom brake before, quickly slipped back in to be seated again. She was all radient of the glimpse she got of the stars that were waiting to enter.
Jeff Goldblum, Burr Steers and Kieran Culkin climbed the stage and were seated directly in front of the audience. They seemed very relaxed about it and the session leader started off by asking the first questions. Jeff and Kieran were both in a very cheerful mood and made fun of the questions and situations. Still they were sincere and answered the questions very openly. To me it also seemed that Kieran was a bit nervous, well at least restless, but maybe that was due to other factors.
Burr was more serious, understandable when taking into account the breakthrough of this movie that he wrote and directed, clearly a personal triumph. As the movie didn't cover a very American theme, it was hard to get funding and Burr had to go to European countries, such as Germany in order to get it together. Using the cast as one of the major straws. One thing was for sure the Q&A was far from boring, as the combination of interesting facts was pleasantly decorated with the fun comments of Jeff and Kieran.
The audience was very eager and interested in this opportunity to get a live feedback from the actors and the director. When the Q&A was opened up to the audience it brought forward some very interesting questions. Many of them were directed at Burr and clearly showed that the people were intrigued by his success and very much interested in how it came to be. In all the seriousness of the session, I felt compelled to the relaxed and joyful atmosphere that Jeff and Kieran were putting on and decided not to ask a serious in dept question, but one from personal angle.
In the past years that I've acted myself I noticed my attachments to certain items that were part of the character I had to present on stage, such a as a Jacket or a hat, and wondered how that was for Kieran. So I raised my hand and got the opportunity to ask Kieran if he still has the scarf he wore in the movie. Of course when you are anticipating on the mood, you easily become a victim of it (smile). You have to realize that Jeff hit Kieran in the movie, leaving him a nice scar on his head (make up of course). So the association to scare instead of scarf was easily made. First Kieran and then Jeff took on the opportunity to exploit this fun word mix-up. I must admit I didn't catch on right away and was a bit confused at first, but shortly after I recognized the humor of it and joined in on the fun.
I did get an answer in the end, and to my pleasant surprise Kieran indeed still has that scarf! With a kind of guilty look at Burr Steers, he admitted that he kind of nicked it and took it with him after filming was completed. In the course of the Q&A some other interesting information came up. Kieran expressed that he was really happy about this movie and that he felt spoiled with the other cast members. Kieran explained that he was able to relate to Igby (Jason Slocumb) based on an age thing, he has a very different live and would never run away from his family. As it turns out Kieran didn't study much on his lines, or as he put it, after about 50 readings with the others, you know your lines. He also commented on the great job that Rory did, playing his younger brother and how Rory has been pushing Kieran to do another movie together in which he can play his younger identity again. Kieran said that Rory was working really hard, like at that time working on about 3 movies at the same time.
From the start of the Q&A till the very end, Kieran had been struggling with his clip-on microphone. Kieran was wearing blue jeans and a white T-shirt, so clipping on the mic, was not really an option. Basically after it didn't stick, he had to hold on the to mic for the remainder of the session. He ended up playing with it, hanging it from his mouth and an attempted to muffle it away, which he shamefully aborted, because of the scrubbing noise that was produced in the attempt of it. The whole mic thing was a little nightmare that followed him even afterwards, as it turned out he forgot to return the mic clip when he rushed off to go see a movie afterwards.
After the special screening preview Kieran had a busy schedule for the days that followed, promoting the film in interviews for magazines, TV shows, etc. Among others he was on the BBC Breakfast program and in the Graham Norton Show. In most of these cases it was Kieran and Jeff together. Jeff is clearly taken by Kieran's talent and his attitude towards fame. Jeff started at the age of 18 or 19, the same age Kieran was when he played the 17 year old Igby. Of course Kieran started way earlier around the age of 6, not counting his presence on stage when he was a 2-year-old baby.
The title of "Igby goes down" could suggest getting down sexually, which of course was in the movie, but was not the theme of it. Kieran enjoyed the misinterpretations and happily reinforced them. For Kieran this movie was his transformation from a child actor into an adult actor, and with the support of Burr and a supurb cast it worked out great. Kieran prefers a straight forward approach from a director, "I try to tell directors not to tiptoe around me, just come out and tell me like it is"
Last year Kieran moved into his own apartment, "small, pretty nice, five stories up in the sky". He enjoys the indoors and doesn't really go out too much. He's not into the New York music scene: "I'm not that hip!". He just likes to keep a low-key profile and spend time with his family. It is not yet clear what he will do next. His last performance was in London, doing the play "This is our Youth". Maybe that can be the basis for a next move, so who knows where we will see his next performance, on stage or in the movie theatre.
Time to Party
Slowly but surely the release of "Party Monster is finding its way into the world. Till recently it was only shown on Film Festivals, but limited releases are coming out and are scheduled for several countries throughout the world. In July it was released in the Soviet Union where it has been doing pretty good. Next will be the US release, which will be a limited release starting 29th of August in San Francisco and 5th of September in other cities including, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. The releases will continue for other states in the months after. For full details on the US release please go to Strand Releasing at
Just recently the film "Party Monster was featured at the 57th Edinburgh International Film Festival in Scotland, UK. End of September it will also be released in the UK and around the same time in the Czech Republic. Other countries are expected to follow, but have not been offcially confirmed.
In the US, "Party Monster" had its LA premiere on July 10 at the opening night gala of the 21st OUTFEST Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. The screening was held in the 2000-seat Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. After the movie completed a selection of the cast (including Macaulay Culkin), director, writers and producers appeared on stage and it was followed by a huge Party afterwards. Apparently about 20 different restaurants were involved in providing the food to these Party Monsters.
In general so far responses to "Party Monster have varied. Some think it is too extreme and doesn't add up, while others think it is fabulous. Some call it an oddity that only makes sense if you're not straight. The actors Seth Green and Macaulay Culkin are in general credited with an admirable performance, but there are also those who feel it all looks fake and unbelievable. I expect that if you have never witnessed those times of the Club Kids in New York, it all must seem unreal.
One thing is for sure, no more innocent Macaulay Culkin image anymore. Of to a new start and looking for more challenging opportunities. The objective in doing "Party Monster was not so much to destroy the child actor image, but more to pursuit the excellence in performance. Or as Macaulay put it: "The more important thing to me was always creating really interesting, unique piece of art, and this is definitely one of those”
Another project of Macaulay is also due to be released. The movie "Saved is scheduled for release in the US on November 21st. (For more details on this movie, please consult the earlier issues of the Fan Magazine or on the official website: www.savedmovie.com. A third movie "Jerusalem" is also announced for next year. It is a psychological thriller based on the true story of the life of Bozidar Alic who originates from Croatia. Filming for this movie started in January and currently has reached its completion. Macaulay Culkin has a supporting role and plays next to Bozidar Alic, who plays himself. It was recorded in the US, Europe and the Middle East, which at times was challenging because of the tight regulations on traveling during the war against terrorism. When I learn more about this movie, I'll let you know.
I've been contacted by the distributor of the book "The Bad Son" that features Macaulay Culkin. I've made reference to its existance before and had people asking me where it could be bought. So please read the following information as provided by the distributor.
"The Bad Son" was created as a companion piece to outre artist, filmaker and writer, Harmony Korine's (Gummo, Julian Donkey-Boy, Crack-Up at the Race Riots) one man exhibition at the Taka Ishii Galley, Tokyo in 1998. This rare item is Korine's FIRST and ONLY solo artist's book. This special artist's book was never distributed in the United States and is impossible to find. The manipulated video still phtographs were taken concurrently by Korine while directing the "Sonic Youth" video, "Sunday". "The Bad Son" features teenage child star, Macaulay Culkin, his teenage bride Rachel Miner (Larry Clark's Bully) and their young entourage. Korine's unconventional techniques include employment of photocopier as a camera to manipulate scale and degenerate tones from his original digital prints.

With this very special artist's book, Korine makes unique commentary on the precocious and provocative cult of teenage sexuality and adolescent popular culture. Intriguing poses by Macaulay Culkin. Fictional text by the author.
