Misa por la Paz y la Justicia
Ariel Ramírez composed the Misa por la Paz y la Justicia in 1981, during the military dictatorship in Argentina, but his intention was to compose a mass about peace and justice throughout the world. "I think, as an artist, one should contribute that this will not happen again here or anywhere else, and so the idea arose of creating music with this message." His childhood friend, the presbytery Osvaldo Catena, assembled the texts, amongst which is the peace message of Pope John Paul II of 1979. The choral director Damián Sánchez made the choral arrangements. Ramírez combines folk music with elements of classical and popular music, using both traditional folk instruments and electronic instruments. Originally, the authorities censored the first performance, because of the text and the folk character. Finally, the Buenos Aires premiere was in April 1982, half a year after the recording of the work. The international premiere was at Carnegie Hall in New York in 1988. The European release followed in the 90's. Ariel Ramírez declared this work to be his favorite on several occasions. At the end of his career, he could present the mass again in Argentina and other countries of Latin America.

Navidad Nuestra
Ariel Ramírez composed the Christmas cantata Navidad Nuestra to complement the Misa Criolla album in 1963. He made the piece together with the poet Félix Luna. Félix Luna once told that the major part of it was written and composed in just one night. Navidad Nuestra tells the Christmas story located in Argentina. Joseph and Mary seek shelter on the pampas, the shepherds bring rural Argentine delicacies, the Kings offer the Child a poncho of real alpaca wool. Musically, the work has a more folkloric character than Misa Criolla. Father Segade made the choral arrangements, as he did to Misa Criolla. Damián Sánchez adapted the choral arrangements for the recording of the work with the Spanish tenor José Carreras in 1987.

In 1995, Ariel Ramírez invited the Argentine folk singer Javier Rodríguez to sing Misa Criolla and Misa por la Paz y la Justicia in his international tours. “He is the best Argentine singer alive and I take great pleasure in listening to him... I met him eight years ago and he has been my lead voice and we have toured the world together ever since.” (Ariel Ramírez, diario UNO, 12/7/2003).

The Cantoría de la Merced of Córdoba was founded in March 2004. This young choir shows its high quality both in the classical repertoire and in the Argentine folk repertoire. Its director and founder Santiago Ruiz won many awards, not only with his choirs, but also as a composer and arranger.

Huygens Vocaal Ensemble was founded in 1994. Since then, they won many national en international prices with their broad classical repertoire. Conductor and artistic director Hans Tijssen conducted Navidad Nuestra many times since 2006, performing with Javier Rodríguez both in the Netherlands and in Argentina.

Misa por la Paz y la Justicia
Ariel Ramírez compuso la Misa por la Paz y la Justicia en la época de la dictatura militar en Argentina, pero su intención era expandir su deseo de paz y justicia a todo el mundo. "Creo que, como artista, uno debe contribuir a que no se repita, (la dictadura) ni aquí ni en ninguna otra parte, y así surgió la idea de musicalizar este mensaje."
Su amigo de la juventud, el presbítero Osvaldo Catena, hizo la recopilación de textos que se utilizaron en la obra, p.e. el mensaje por la paz de su Santidad Juan Pablo II de 1979 (en ocasión del conflicto limítrofe entre Argentina y Chile).
El director coral Damián Sánchez fue el encargado de realizar los arreglos corales.
En esta obra, Ramírez combina música folclórica con elementos de música clásica, utilizando tanto instrumentos foklóricos como instrumentos clásicos y electrónicos.
Las autoridades argentinas intentaron censurar el estreno de la Misa, por el mensaje de sus textos y por el carácter folclórico de la misma. Finalmente se estrenó en Buenos Aires en Abril de 1982, medio año después de la grabación de la obra. El estreno internacional fue en el Carnegie Hall de Nueva York en 1988.
El propio Ariel Ramírez declaró en reiteradas ocasiones que la Misa por la Paz y la justicia era su obra favorita. Al fin de su carrera pudo representar la obra nuevamente en Argentina y en otros paises de Latinoamérica.

Navidad Nuestra
Ariel Ramírez compuso la cantata navideña Navidad Nuestra para complementar el disco de Misa Criolla en 1963. Realizó esta obra en intensa colaboración con el poeta Félix Luna. Se dice que hicieron letra y música de Navidad Nuestra en una sola noche.
Navidad Nuestra cuenta la historia navideña situada en Argentina. José y María buscan alojamiento en las pampas, los pastores llevan quesillos, los Reyes Magos ofrecen al Niño un poncho de alpaca real.
Musicalmente la obra tiene un carácter más folclórico que Misa Criolla.

Javier Rodríguez es cantautor de música popular y folclórica. En 1995 Ariel Ramírez lo convocó para cantar Misa Criolla y Misa por la Paz y la Justicia. “…es el mejor cantante argentino que hay, y a mi me produce un placer muy grande escucharlo…”; “…hace ya como 8 años lo conocí y desde entonces es mi cantante y hemos recorrido el mundo juntos…”. La Cantoría de la Merced de Córdoba fue fundada en marzo de 2004. Esta joven agrupación demuestra su gran calidad interpretando tanto repertorio clásico como repertorio folclórico argentino. Su director y fundador Santiago Ruiz ha obtenido importantes premios, no solo con sus coros, sino también como compositor y arreglador.

Daniel Morcos, productor artístico, es pianista, compositor y profesor de Ensamble Musical en La Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Mendoza. Ha acompañado en reiteradas ocasiones Misa por la Paz y la Justicia y Navidad Nuestra en las giras europeas de Javier Rodríguez y colaboró en la edición europea de la partitura de Misa por la Paz y la Justicia. Con su profundo conocimiento de las obras ha realizado la producción artística de este CD.
