RESERGE - a tribute to Serge Chaloff

In June Rik van den Bergh recorded - together with The Reeds - a new CD at Studio de Smederij. The CD, entitled RESERGE, is a tribute to the great baritone player Serge Chaloff.

Serge Chaloff was a key player in the development of the baritone saxophone in jazz. He was inspired by the playing of Charlie Parker and one of the first beboppers on baritone. Both as a leader and a sideman, Chaloff made several interesting recordings for jazz labels like Savoy, Storyville and Capitol. Blue Serge on the latter label is generally thought to be his best record. He was also a member of the famous Four Brothers sax section of the Woody herman Band (1947-1949). Serge died exactly fifty years ago in 1957 ... so time for a tribute to this great but unfortunately underrated baritone saxophonist.
