Aruba is an island in the Caribbean, an autonomous territory
in the Kingdom of the Netherlands since 1986. The Dutch conquered the island In
1636 and controlled it since, apart from a short period during the Napoleonic
Wars. Before 1986 Aruba was a part of
the Netherlands Antilles. The call for independence grew and it was decided
that Aruba could have the status of an autonomous territory and become
independent in 1996. During a conference in The Hague in 1994 this date was
shelved. The economy is for the largest part dependent on tourism, especially
from the United States.
