Dahomey was renamed People's Republic of Benin on 30 November 1975 by president Mathieu Kérékou. In 1990 he left his Marxist ideology behind after an economic crisis and decided to introduce democracy again. In 1991 he lost the presidential elections and thus became the first black African president to resign after an election defeat. Since then elections have been held regularly. The success of these multiparty elections make Benin a model democracy in Africa.

The name Benin refers to the historic African Kingdom of Benin and was chosen to replace the French colonial name of the country.
