The Netherlands is the European part of the Kingdom of
the Netherlands (the other parts being Netherlands Antilles and Aruba). The
country lies in a delta formed by three major European rivers: Rhine, Meuse and
Schelde. Most of the country is below sea level, which led the Dutch to design
a system of protection and land forming as early as the 12th century. The
Netherlands has a rich history. It was one of the major colonial powers and in
the 17th century it was the most powerful country in the world. Dutch painters,
architects and artists are renowned.
After the Second World War the Netherlands developed
into a modern country. It is a major exporter of agricultural products and
technology and one of the largest contributors to international development aid.
Through this and the fact that the Dutch army participates in a number of peace
keeping operations, the country is a valued player in the international field.
