Niger is a landlocked sub-Saharan country in Western Africa, named after the Niger River. In the 19th century, contact with the West began when the first European explorers explored the area, searching for the source of the Niger River. Although French efforts at pacification began before 1900, dissident ethnic groups, especially the desert Tuareg, were not subdued until 1922, when Niger became a French colony. Until 1958 Niger was part of French West Africa.

In 1958 Niger became an autonomous state within the French Community and full independence was reached on 3 August 1960. After independence the country suffered droughts and food shortages. This led to political instability.  In 1974 the government of the country's first president Hamani Dior was overthrown by a group of army officers led by lieutenant-colonel Seyni Kountché.

Democracy was re-instated in 1989 and a new constitution was adopted in 1992, followed by general elections in 1993. After only a few years the militairy took over government again in 1996 under colonel Ibrahim Barre Mainassata who was elected president. In 1999 Ibrahim was murdered and replaced by the new militairy leader Daouda Malam Wanke. He promised democratic elections and the same year Mamadou Tandja was elected president of Niger. Tandja was reelected on 4 December 2004.
