Union
of Soviet Socialist Republics
The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (also known as
Soviet Union) was a union of republics formed within the territory of the
Russian empire after the revolution of 1917. It existed from 1922 to 1991. From
1956 it consisted of 15 union republics. The state was led by the Communist
Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), the only party permitted by Constitution. It
controlled the government apparatus and decisions affecting economy and
society. CPSU followed the ideology of Marxism-Leninism and operated on
principle of democratic centralism. Primary CPSU bodies: Politburo, highest
decision-making organ; Secretariat, controller of party bureaucracy; and
Central Committee, party's policy forum.
In 1991 a number of constituent republics declared
their independence, and the USSR was officially dissolved on 31 December 1991.
