9 October
is the Universal Post Union's anniversary which is declared as the World Post
Day. To coincide with the Day, the postal administrations affiliated to UPU are
suggested to issue a special stamp simultaneously to commemorate this day. In
1998 the day was celebrated as "World Stamp Day" in order to promote
and develop philatelic activities throughout the world.
Earlier stamp issues have the inscription UPU Day
(Journée de l'UPU). According to information from the UPU the day was renamed
to better describe the importance of the postal system for international
cooperation.
