The Name of the Family

The origin of the name Oomen might be the German name 'Oem' or 'Ohm'. The postfix '-en' was a Germanic reference to 'son of'. A voluminous register of the Oomen family in the Netherlands lists Jan Oomen, born in 1383 near the village of Oosterhout, as the first ancestor in the records.

The family name has been written in various ways through the ages. Variations were Oomen, Oomens, Oomes and Oome. These four names can still be found in The Netherlands. They can all be traced back to 14th century Jan Oomen.

Fourteen generations and almost 500 years of history separate the birth of Jan Oomen in 1383 and of Marcel Oomen in 1953, author of the Oomen Family Website. The highest concentration of Oomen-family members can still be found in the Oosterhout region, in the province of Noord Brabant, but the name can also be found throughout the Netherlands and Flanders, the Dutch speaking part of Belgium, and even in such distant places like Mexico, Australia and New Zealand!
