Inleiding
Sinds 1811 is de naam Posthumus in Nederland en in landen waar Nederlanders naar toe zijn geëmigreerd, als familienaam
ingeburgerd. Al deze families zijn terug te voeren op een Friese voorvader, want alleen in Friesland heeft men zich bij
Decreet van 18 augustus 1811 van keizer Napoleon onder de naam Posthumus of Postumus laten inschrijven bij de burgerlijke
stand.

Preamble
Since 1811 the name Posthumus came to stay as surname in The Netherlands and in countries whereto Dutchmen
emigrated. All those families fall back on a Frisian ancestor, because only in the province Friesland they registred themselves
at the registration service under the name Posthumus or Postumus, by Decree of 18 august 1811 of
emperor Napoleon.

In 1811 ging Gerrit Gerrits, zoon van Gerrit Hielkesz. en Ybeltje Pietersdr., naar de Mairie
Workum in Friesland, en liet zich inschrijven onder de naam Posthumus.
In 1811 Gerrit Gerrits, son of Gerrit Hielkesz. en Ybeltje Pietersdr., went to the Mairie Workum
in Friesland, to register himself as Posthumus.
