This very limited illy collection cup was decorated by the setting designer Emanuele Luzzati (born in Genoa in 1921). Luzzati has designed over 400 sets for plays, operas and dance shows, working for the most important directors and the leading teatres both in Italy and abroad.
So it's no wonder that illy asked him to decorate this special cup that was released for the 40th anniversary of the “Teatro Stabile del Friuli-Venezia Giulia” in Trieste. But, there is a rumour that this was done by a member of the Illy family without approval of the rest of the company…
Maybe that’s the reason, that until 1999 (in the "catalogo 1992-2000" that came with the special, 7 cups, Minimalia set), you could not find the cup in the brochures that came with the illy collection sets.
Well, the cup is listed now and illy is still sponsoring the teatre, so I guess everything worked out fine at the end.
