Robert Rauschenberg (born 1925 in Port Arthur, Texas) is one of the biggest American Pop Art artists of modern times. In 1998 he was asked to design the next illy collection set.
With copies of maps 12 cities in the word, one of the most popular illy collection sets was born.
And, maps on espresso cups seems to be working for illy, because in
1999 FrancisFrancis (Fransesco Illy) released the Phillip Jhonson "Silver Cities"
cups with 19th century maps on them. So, five cups and five saucers are decorated with actual reproductions of the maps of ten of the most important cities in the world. A virtual trip from the blocks of Manhattan to the boulevards of Moscow, from Rio to Rome, from the wide arteries of Mexico City and Beijing which underline the international nature of coffee." That's how illy describes this set.
But,.... you mentioned before that there are maps op 12 cities....? Yes, there is Paris cup and Madrid saucer too which were withdrawn by illy!
