Tagalog Translator for Windows
(free download)

Last update: 13 sep 2008

History

When I was traveling to Manila for the second time I wanted to have my own dictionary for translating simple things, just to understand the local taxi driver and to be able to ask a waitress for a mango shake. I did not understand the language at all, so I had to communicate in English as the only common language available.

As soon as I came back in The Netherlands, I started searching for word lists on the world wide web. Only a few websites were dedicated to the language of the Philippines (Tagalog), so I collected these lists in order to compose a translation table. In December 2001 I developed one of the first versions of the Tagalog Translator, including a full functional dictionary, expressions and some Philippines related bookmarks.

Functional Overview

Main Menu

As soon as you start up the Tagalog Translator, the main menu will appear, containing the following choices:

  • Dictionary
  • Expressions
  • Internet (links)
  • About this program

The entire program was developed in Delphi 5 (later migrated to Delphi 7) and uses Paradox database tables for the storage of all data.

Dictionary

The main function of the Tagalog Translator is the dictionary.

The upper half of the screen can be used to search and browse for a (part of a) word or expression in order to lookup the Tagalog or English translation for it.

The results will be shown on the lower half of the screen, including several useful details and examples:

  • Tagalog
  • Active verb
  • Passive verb
  • English
  • L2 Definition
  • Examples
  • Notes

The database is containing about 5,400 records which will enable you to find (almost) everything you wish to translate!

Expressions

When you are (only) using the dictionary you won't be able to speak Tagalog! Therefore, the dictionary is equiped with several practical examples.

If you would like to search on topic (for example: traveling, food, conversations, etc.)then you will find the required functionality in this screen. Here some basic sentences are grouped into several practical topics.

If you click on one of these topics, a collection of sentences - belonging to the selected topic - will be shown immediately.

Additional sources

Why do you want to learn some of the Tagalog basics? I guess because of your plans to travel to the Philippines? Am I right?

Well, this screen is just a collection of some interesting websites I have used while developing the Tagalog Translator.

You will find much information about the language as well as about the Philippines. Just click on the "Go to"  button in order to launch your browser and to load the required site. Suggestions for additional links are welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question: How can I run the Tagalog Translator on a non-English Windows environment?

Answer: This issue is solved in version 1.9. If you are using an older version of the Tagalog Translator and you have a non-English version of Windows on your computer, then you will need to change settings manually. After the Tagalog Translator has been installed completely, please find the file BDEADMIN.EXE on your computer. Remember, the file BDEADMIN.EXE will be installed as part of the Tagalog Translator package but it will be located in a separate directory. Run the program BDEADMIN.EXE and change the database path of the Tagalog Translator manually.

Question: How can I install the Tagalog Translator properly on a computer running on Windows Vista?

Answer: If you are running Windows Vista, then probably you have had some problems with the older versions of the Tagalog Translator. Since version 1.9 Windows Vista is supported. If you still have problems, please report!!

Question: Can I maintain the dictionary (for example: add new translations)?

Answer: No, at this moment it is not (yet) possible to maintain the dictionary of the Tagalog Translator application. However, if you want to help to extend the dictionary then please contact me. I am pleased to accept your improvements.

If you have any other problems then please send me a message.
