DESIGN
Developed by SIG for the Swiss army rifle
contest in 1979. The SG-550 is based upon
previous designs by SIG, the 540 and 541.
The firing mechanism is quite similar to
the AK-47. It has the same successful diopter
sights as Heckler & Koch weapons. A 0-1-F
trigger group is standard, although a three
round burst group can also be added. SG stands
for ‘Sturmgewehr’, meaning ‘assault rifle’. |
| The SG-552 Commando was developed for the
commandos and anti terrorist teams. Because
of the short barrel and gas piston, the SG-552
Commando does not use the same firing mechanism.
The different mechanism allows a higher rate
of fire, making it more effective at short
ranges. Together with the G36C it outperforms
the AK-74SU and HK 53. |
| Also known as SG-551-1P. This rifle is similar
to the SG-551. The difference is that it
comes standard with a scope and cheekpiece. |
| The SG-551 is the carbine version of the
SG-550. It has a shorter barrel and handguard.
It can still be equipped with a under barrel
grenade launcher. It can not fire rifle grenades
and it is not possible to fit a bayonet. |
| The standard assault rifle. It can be fitted
with a under barrel grenade launcher and
a bayonet. Standard NATO rifle grenades can
be fired. When fitted with a scope and cheekpiece
it is called SG-550 SP. |
| Also known as SSG-550. The Swiss like sniping
with assault rifles. Hence, even the SG-552
is often seen with cheekpiece and scope.
This is the perfect solution. An accurate
sniper rifle based upon the SG-550. It’s
low calibre allows for quick follow-up shots
and the bullets high speed makes it easier
to hit moving targets. A bipod is standard.
Critics say its damage is too low. Just shoot
twice. |
PERFORMANCE
The SG-550 and SG-551 are very accurate because
of their long barrels. It is one of the first
rifles to use a lot of plastics. All weapons
are fitted with STANAG quick-detach scope
mounts and their precision fit ensures zero-retention,
even after repeated mountings. All weapons
are ambidextrous and have a folding stock.
The weapon is very reliable and the firing
mechanism of the AK-47 ensures that it will
fire under harsh conditions. Reliability
is further improved by non-jamming, translucent
magazines, which allow you to see how much
ammunition you have left. The magazines can
easily be clamped together without extra
tools. These features are adapted by the
G36.
USE
- Used by the Swiss Army. It is called Stgw.
90 by the Swiss Army. ‘Stgw.’is a abbreviation
for ‘Sturmgewehr’ which means ‘assault rifle’
- Swiss and German special police teams use
SG-552, SG-551 and SG-550 Sniper.
