DESIGN
The M901 is a M113 armored personnel carrier
fitted with a TOW launcher. Reloading of
the TOW and ITOW takes long. If the missile
misses, it is likely that the M901 is destroyed
by the enemy tank. Therefore the M901 was
fitted with a two-tube TOW launcher. The
modern M901 is called the ITV (Improved TOW
Vehicle) When the launcher is raised it is
ready to fire the modern TOW-2. To reload
the launcher is put into a vertical position. |
| A M113 fitted with a pedestal mounted TOW
anti-tank missile launcher. It uses TOW and
ITOW missiles. |
| The pedestal mounted TOW launcher replaced
by a two-tube ‘hammerhead’ TOW launcher,
which can fire the TOW-2. The M981 FISTV
(Fire Support Team Vehicle) is also a M113
fitted with the ‘hammerhead’ turret. The
turret holds no rockets and the TOW sighting
system is replaced by other electronics. |
PERFORMANCE
The M901 is a cheap tank destroyer.
Both
the M113 and TOW proved to be
effective and
reliable. It also was a commercial
succes.
Many countries using the M113
adopted the
M901 or M901 ITV.
