DESIGN
The 2S7 ‘Pion’ (peony) is the world’s largest
common self propelled howitzer. It is fitted
with the 2A44 56.2 calibre 203mm howitzer.
The US also has a 203mm howitzer, the M110,
but the 2S7 has a longer barrel and uses
much heavier ammunition. While firing the
crew is standing unprotected at the rear
of the vehicle. A spade is lowered before
firing, but if necessary the 2S7 can fire
with reduced charges at low angles while
in travel mode. Only four rounds of ammunition
are carried by the 2S7. A machinegun and
a man portable surface to air missile are
carried inside the vehicle. In Russian service
it is called SO-203. Its cold war NATO call
sign is M-1975. The 2S7M has eight round
on board and a new loading system increases
the rate of fire to 2-2.5 rounds per minutes.
The new radio and targeting system make the
2S7M more accurate. |
PERFORMANCE
The 2S7 ‘Pion’ is protected against schrapnel,
small arms fire and NBC weapons. It is better
than the US M110. It has a longer range and
fires a heavier projectile. It has a range
of 37.5 km, or 47.5 km with RAP shells. There
are also tactical nuclear, chemical and concrete
piercing projectiles. But all exept the concrete
piercing projectile are believed to be out
of service. Over 1000 have been built.
