Using the power of Mana,
a civilization had grown strong....
In time, Mana was used to create the ultimate weapon: the Mana Fortress....
This angered the Gods.
They sent their beasts to destroy the Fortress....
A violent war rocked the world and Mana seemed to disappear...
Before all was lost, a hero with the Mana sword smashed the Fortress...
Though the civilization had been destroyed, the world was peaceful again.

But time flows like a river.....
and history repeats........

These are the opening words of : Secret of Mana.
Secret of Mana is a fantasy Role Playing Game for the Super Nintendo System (SNES).
It was created by the same company that created the Final Fantasy series: Squaresoft.

When the game starts, you (the hero) and two friends are playing outside your village.
You fall down in a river and you hear a voice calling your name.
Next, you see a sword that's stuck in a rock in the river.
You pull out the sword.

This is the beginning of this adventure.
Your first goal is to restore the Mana force of the sword you just took.

The evil Empire, lead by the Emperor is trying to restore the old Mana Fortress.
To do this they must first unlock the seals from the worlds Mana seeds.
There are 8 Mana seeds kept in 8 palaces.
You must find them and seal the seeds with your sword, before the Empire finds them.

Secret of Mana is a top down RPG (you look down upon your party of heroes and on the surroundings).
You can play the game with 2 persons at the same time ( if you have a multi player adapter, you can play the game with 3 persons).
After some time your group of heroes will consist of three members: the young hero himself, a young dwarf and a girl.
By talking to Non Player Characters (NPC's) you'll find out about the plot of the game and where to go next.
You're journey will bring you to castle's, icelands, deserts and villages.
There are stores throughout the game where you can buy supplies.
You can buy items to restore your health, protective items to wear (armoury, caps and wristbands) and items to restore your amount of Mana.
When you get further in the game these items will become stronger and more expensive.

In the game you can find 8 different types of weapons.
When you find them, these weapons are level 1 weapons.
Each time you complete a quest or battle enough enemies, you get an orb for one of those weapons.
If you take this orb to Watts the blacksmith he will forge your weapon to a higher level.
Each weapon has 8 different levels.

In each village you'll find shops and an Inn.
In this Inn you can sleep and restore your health and your Mana.
Mana is needed to cast spells.
Only the dwarf and the girl can cast spells.
They both can cast 20 spells in 7 different groups of spells.
The young dwarf's spells are mostly attack spells.
The girl's spells are mostly protective and healing.

Your journey will bring you to different continents.
In the beginning of the game you can travel by foot or by canon.
Later in the game you'll be able to fly on "Flammie", the friendly dragon.

You're able to control your possessions and many different aspects of the game by using so called "rings".
Each party member has it own rings.
These rings hold the possessions, weapons and armoury of that party member.
By navigating through these rings you can wear and use certain items.
A special ring is the edit ring.
In this ring you can control your party.
You can check your parties statistics with the ring (level, abilities, experience etc).
You can also check the levels of your weapons and magic spells through this ring.
Another possibility is to determine which party member will have what position during fights (from: keep away, to attack).

Some final thoughts

Secret of Mana is a typical Japanese RPG.
It was created by the same people that created the Final Fantasy series and many other RPG's for the Nintendo system.
There are big similarities (In my opinion) between for example Final Fantasy 2 and Secret of Mana.
The whole drawing of characters and parts of the story may seem a bit childish.
Still, Secret of Mana is a great game.
There are many different scenes and possibilities in the game.
Secret of Mana, part 2 was released some time ago in Japanese (Seiken Densetsu 3), but for some strange reason, it was never brought out in an English version.
In light of the popularity of Secret of Mana part 1, I can only hope that one day it will be translated and brought out in an English version.
