Genealogy Kolner

Introduction

Like many have discovered on conducting ancestral research in Overijssel, the surnames can sometimes be very confusing. On many occasions children seem not to inherit the surname through their father. They might get the surname of the mother or an entirely different name which often is related to the farm or estate where their parents lived when the children were born. Names ending in -ing or -ink often refer to an estate or farm and the same goes for names containing -huys, -huijs or -huis which all mean "house". The meaning of -ing and -ink is roughly translated "at" or "belonging to".

Most of the Kolners lived for many generations in two small villages; Borne Ov. (hamlet Hertme) and Weerselo (hamlets Hasselo and Dulder), which limits the whole ancestral research area to a circle with a radius of less than 10 km.

There are some early records with respect to Kolners. In a document of 1439 a Johann Mulert is also known as 'die Kolner'. This Johan Mulert with the same addition also appears in a document related to a lease of 1440.

A document ofthe 'Huisarchief Almelo' shows that on 13 December 1563 a Henryck Collener and his wife Jenneken acquired some furniture. Any relation with the family tree has not been established yet.

According to information received from J. Wissink from Zwolle, see also Wissink family tree, Lucas branch and the pages of the foundation Heemkundegroep Hertme, there is already an estate Colner in the 17th and even the 16th century in Hertme. On a map of about 1830 an estate 'De Kolner' is located together with the estates 'Kolner-Jans' and 'Emptenbelt' in the so called 'de Kolner landen' (the Kolner fields). This area is known at that time as West Hattem (Hattem in stead of Hertme, because someone wrote the wrong name on the maps). Today there is still a farm 'de Köller' at the Kerkweg in Hertme. It is a holiday farm.

From the research by J. Wissink it appears that the first (documented) Colners that lived at the Colner estate were:

Johan Colnaar and his wife Jenneken. Married before 1638.
From this marriage possibly a son:

Geert Collener (RC), married befored 1675 Cornelia ter Brugge (protestant).
From this marriage possibly a son:

Lucas Colners married before 13 July 1713 a Euphemia, then about 1716 a Machteld and before 13 August 1719 a Hermina (Hermken, Hermanna)

This Lucas Colners also appears in the excellent database about Borne Ov. of A. Santen (www.xanten.org). One of the children from the third marriage is a Gerardus Kolner, christened 21 August 1722 in Borne Ov. There is no documented proof of a relationship between Geert Collener and Johan Colnaar nor of a relationship between Lucas Colners and Geert Collener. For the family tree we have allocated therefore Lucas Colners to Generation I. The data used to compile the Generation I and partly Generation II overviews below are the earlier mentioned sources: the database of A. Santen and the information received from J. Wissink.

(* =born, ~ =christened, † =died)

I.

Lucas Colners, * before 1683, † after 1748, married a Euphemia (Venne), a Machteld and a Hermina

From the first marriage:

  1. Joanna Colner, ~ before 1716 in Borne Ov. , married 1734 a Hermannus Rigterinck.
  2. No children from this marriage, but from a second marriage of Hermannus with Joanna Wildijck two children were born and they have Collener as their surname; a Joanna Collener, christened May 1755, witnesses Jannes Gospen and Joanna Wildijck and an Assuerrus Collener, ~ 30 November 1756, witnesses Egbert Wildijck and Susanna Gospen. It is possible that Hermannus and his second wife still lived at the Colner estate and thus the children were named after the estate where they were born

From the second marriage:

  1. Lambertus Colners, ~ 1716 in Borne Ov.

From the third marriage:

  1. Gerard Colner, ~ 13 August 1719 in Borne Ov. with witnesses Joan onder... and Gesina Cond...This child probably died before 1722.
  2. Euphoemia Colner, ~ 30 August 1720 in Borne Ov. with witnesses Steph Col... and Ber....
  3. Gerardus Kolner, see II.
  4. Gesijna Colner, ~ 21 January 1724 in Borne Ov..
  5. Lubbertus Colner, ~ 22 December 1727 in Borne Ov. with witnesses Bernd.... matertera (grandparents).

II: son of I.

Gerardus Kolner (Collener), ~ 21 August 1722 in Borne Ov. with witnesses Gesina Colner and Bern... anthuijs., married 22 April 1754 in Borne Ov. Catharina Pieper.

From this marriage:

  1. Lubbertus Aelderink, ~ about 1755 in Borne Ov. with witnesses Bernardus Pieper and Hermina Collen.
This Bernardus Pieper might be a brother of Catharina. Hermina Collen might be a sister or the mother of Gerardus Collener. A Bernardi Pieper was married to a Hermina and when their daughter Euphemia was christened in 1755, one of the witnesses was a Gerrard Collenaer. The name Aelderink is a clear example of a child getting the name of an estate or farm.
  2. Aleidis Collener, ~ 25 November 1757 in Borne Ov. with witnesses Gerrit Veldhuijs and Euphemia Wansink. She probably married 22 July 1782 in Borne Ov. Joannes Lenzink
The name Veldhuijs also appears as a witness to the christening of the before mentioned daughter of Bernardi Pieper which again points to a potential relationship between Catharina Pieper and Bernardi Pieper.
  3. Hermanna Collener, ~ 11 April 1760 in Borne Ov. with witnesses Antonius Wansink and Hermina Pieper (who might be a sister of Catharina or the wife or Bernardus Pieper), † 9 April 1834, age 73, in Hertme-Borne Ov. (house 38) and was married to Gerrit (Gradus) ten Kate (Korte), farmer, * abt. 1748, † 19 October 1828, age appr. 80, in Hertme-Borne Ov. (house 38), son of Hendrikus ten Kate and of Aleida ten Kate. This Gradus or Gerrit ten Kate was appointed in 1813 guardian of the children of his brother-in-law Joannes.
  4. Joannes Collener, see III.
  5. Elisabetha Collener, farmer's wife, ~ 9 April 1766 in Borne Ov. with witnesses Lambertus Oude Veldhuijs and Gesina Collener (who might be the sister of Gerardus Kolner). Elisabeth died 21 February 1828, age 61, in Hertme-Borne Ov. (house 36). Marriage bans in 21 September 1795 in Borne Ov. and marriage 26 October 1795 in Borne Ov. with Joannes (Jannes) Lubbers (Beld op Olde Aalderink), farmer, born in Zenderen. Lastname of Elisabeth also Kolenaar or Beld op Olde Aalderink.
From the house numbers mentioned under 3. and 5. it is clear that Ten Kate (or Korte or Kotte) and Aalderink (or Lubbers) were neighbours. That is confirmed by the fact that her neighbours Hendrikus ten Kate and Jannes Aalderink reported the death of Elisabeth. See also the note written under generation IVb.
In the death certificate of Elisabeth the name of her mother is Catharina Huiskes!
  6. Johanna Collenaar, ~ 21 July 1770 in Borne Ov. with witnesses Gerrard Pieper (possible brother of Bernard and Catharina Pieper) and Joanna Wansink. Johanna died 7 January 1847, age 76, in her house in Hertme-Borne Ov.. Marriage bans 19 May 1797 in Borne Ov., marriage 17 June 1797 in Borne Ov. with Gerrit Jan Brinkhuijs, born in Saasveld)
In the death certificate of Johanna her parents are registered as Bertus Kolnaar and Catharina Oude Aalderink. Her death was reported by Johannes Oude Engberink and Gerrit Jan Brinkhuis (not her husband), neighbours.
According to again a map of about 1830 estates named 'Kotte', 'Aalderink', 'Oud Aalderink', 'Oud Veldhuis', 'Veldhuis' and 'de Pieper' were all located closely together in East Hattem (Hertme). The Kolner estate is in West Hattem (Hertme), roughly a mile north west of 'de Pieper'. From the names of the witnesses and the last name of their first child it looks as if Gerardus Collener and Catharina did not live at the Kolner estate in West Hattem (Hertme). Not even a mile south east of 'de Pieper' there is already the hamlet of Hasselo in the municipality of Weerselo.

III: son of II.

Joannes Collener (Johannes Kolner or Johannes Langenkamp), farmer, ~ 8 January 1763 in Borne Ov., † 19 September 1812, age 49, in Hasselo-Weerselo (house 75), married 11 November 1790 in Oldenzaal (rc) Janna Nijhuis alias Langenkamp, † before 1802. Second marriage 20 October 1802 rc Deurningen-Weerselo (marriage bans 30 September 1802 emergency peace court held in Losser) to Johanna Smitkamp or Leusenkamp, farmer's wife, ~ 6 June 1767, † 15 February 1848, age 80, in Hasselo-Weerselo. Johanna was a daughter of Gerrit Smitkamp and of Johanna Leusenkamp. They lived until appr. the end of 1812 at a farm with the name Langenkamp in the hamlet of Hasselo.

The death certificate of 1812 mentions the name Jannes Langenkamp in stead of Kolner, but his parents are Gerrit Kölner and Janna. His death is reported by his neighbours Albert Vollenbroek and Mannes Lansink. Jannes died at the house nr. 75 in the hamlet of Hasselo. A few months after his death his widow Johanna Leusenkamp appears twice before the judge of peace in Oldenzaal. On 16 January 1813 the court has to decide about the guardianship for the young children named Gerrit-Jan, Gezina, Catherina, Gerhardus and Johannes. The oldest child is about 10. The family counsel that met at the court consists of the uncles by marriage of the children from father's side; Gerrit ten Kate, Johan Lubbers and Gerrit Jan Brinkhuis, and from the mother's side the uncle by marriage Gerrit Brinkhuis and the two full uncles Albert and Gradus Leusenkamp. Gerrit ten Kate is appointed as guardian. On 30 January 1813 again a court session is held with the same family councel attending. This time a decision is requested with respect to the estate called 'An den Langenkamp' and the piece of farm land called 'de Looschot' in the hamlet of Hasselo. The estate and farm land were bought 17 years earlier (about 1795) with borrowed money. In 1812 the interest had not been paid for 3 years and the loan of 500 guilders was called. Janna Leusenkamp, who left the estate at the end of 1812, could not pay back the loan or the interest. The court was asked, and the family counsel backed that up, to allow Janna to either cede the estate with the debts on it or to sell it by public auction (although the last option would fetch less than the loan and interest).
The last document explains where the name Langenkamp comes from. The name appears as the name of the son Gerhardus who is called Kolner op den Langenkamp. It also is the life long surname the daughter Anglia from the first marriage. The death certificate of 1812 is attached to the 1818 marriage certificate of Anglia (Engel) Langenkamp's marriage. By the time Gerhardus married in 1832 the death certificate must have been forgotten or the relation with the name Langenkamp was no longer recognised, because for his marriage Gerhardus had to acquire a Certificate of Acquaintance which put the death of his father around 1809 (which has caused some confusion for a while because in 1809 a Joannes Kolner did die in the nearby town of Borne Ov.). Remarkable is that the marriage certificate of 1818 mentions that the mother of Anglia is present at the wedding. She is called Janna Langenkamp. That must have been Janna Leusenkamp, her step mother. In 1832 the mother of Gerhardus Kolner op den Langenkamp is also present at the wedding and she is called Johanna Smitkamp. Why and when her named changed from Leusenkamp to Smitkamp is not known. She obviously had two brothers (Albert and Gradus) and they were both known as Leusenkamp.

From the first marriage:

  1. Anglia Langenkamp, ~ 8 April 1792 rc Oldenzaal, witnesses Gerardo Kölner and Gesina Nieuhuys alias Langenkamp, † 13 December 1861, age 69, in Hasselo-Weerselo (house 155), married 4 December 1818 in Weerselo Hermannus Leus(en)kamp, ~ 31 May 1790 rc Deurningen-Weerselo, † 31 June 1860, age 69, in Hasselo-Weerselo (house 155), son of Gerhardus and Johanna in 't Olde Leusenk alias Leus(en)kamp. Witnesses at the wedding Albert Leusenkamp 47 (most likely her uncle), Gerrit Jan Leusink 30, Gerardus Oude Tanke 40 and Gerrit Mettinkhoff 50.
  2. Euphemia Collener, ~ 24 February 1795 rc Deurningen-Weerselo, witnesses Joannes Laalvin (Leusink?) and Catharina Keullener, † 17 April 1868, age 74, in Deurningen-Weerselo (house 31), married abt. 1824 and probably in Germany Jan Berend Wenting/Wensink, ~ abt. 1800 in Epe (Germany), † 20 January 1873, age 73, in Deurningen-Weerselo (house 31), son of Roelof Wensink and Johanna Markslag.

From the second marriage:

  1. Gerrit Jan Kolner, * about 1803 in Weerselo. Must has been alive in 1813. A marriage and/or death certificate has yet to be found.
  2. Geziena Kolner, ~ 15 December 1804 rc Deurningen-Weerselo, † 21 April 1879, age 74, in Hasselo-Weerselo (house 68), married 18 May 1833 in Weerselo Frederik Vollenbroek, ~ 2 June 1788 in Weerselo, † 27 August 1833, age 45, in Hasselo-Weerselo (house 62), son of Gerrit Vollenbroek and Willemina Koops.
  3. Frederick was a widower of Geziena Gorbert/Gorbering. Marriage witnesses in 1833 were: Jan Mettinkhoff 45,Gerardus Kolner 24, Jannes Kolner 23 and Jan Hendrik Vollenbroek 24 jaar. His death certificate mentions his full name as Frederik Vollenbroek op Gorbert.
  4. Catharina Kolner, ~ 9 January 1807 rc Deurningen-Weerselo, † 26 July 1871, age 64, in Hasselo-Weerselo (house 83), married in Weerselo 14 January 1833 Jan (oude) Mettinkhoff, ~ 9 March 1798 rc Deurningen-Weerselo, † 28 December 1855, age 57, in Hasselo-Weerselo (house 65), son of Gerrit Jan (oude) Mettinkhoff) and of Berendina Exterenkotte.
  5. Gerardus Kolner, see IVa.
  6. Johannes Kolner or Oude Aalderink, see IVb.

IVa: son of III.

Gerardus Kolner, farmer, * 16 February 1809 in Weerselo, † 18 March 1852, age 43, in Hasselo-Weerselo, married 10 December 1832 in Weerselo Maria Game, farmer's wife, * 27 February 1809 in Weerselo, † 26 October 1866, age 57, in Hasselo-Weerselo (house 67), daughter of Gerrit Game and Hermina Nibbelink.

In the marriage certificate and in the extract of the christening certificate the full name of the groom is recorded as Gerardus Kolner op den Langenkamp.
The mothers of groom and bride are present at the wedding; the fathers already died. A death certificate of Gerrit Game (died 1823) was added to the marriage certificate.
The mother of Maria Game was probably of German origin. Her name also appears as Nibbelt in stead of Nibbelink and when Maria died in 1866 her mother seemed to be still living; in Prussia. She was the second wife of Gerrit Game. Gerrit was a widower of a Maria ter Beek.
The also required Certificate of the National Militia shows that Gerardus did not serve in the army. The same certificate also shows that he had red hair. That colour has been inherited by a number of his descendants right down to the current generation.
The name Game also appears as Gaamen or Gaem. A farm in Hasselo with the name Gaamen existed until 1926, but an estate called Gaem already appears in lease protocols dating back to the 16th century. The property seems to have been bought in the mid 18th century by a Jasper in Gaem and it was transferred to his son Bernardus Gaamen, who died about 1780 and transferred the property to his son Gerrit. This Gerrit does not have to be the father of Maria. Another Gerrit Game died in 1814. However both persons called Gerrit Game appear to have lived at the same address in the hamlet Hasselo; the house with nr. 49 in Hasselo.

From this marriage:

  1. Geertruida Kolner, *  25 March 1833 in Hasselo-Weerselo. A marriage or death certificate has yet to be found.
  2. Janna Kolner, * 25 March 1833 in Hasselo-Weerselo, † 1 August 1899, age 66, in Gammelke-Weerselo (house 16), married 1 August 1866 in Weerselo Harmen Jan Oude Griepink, farmer, * 12 September 1822 in Weerselo, † 16 May 1909, age 86, in Gammelke-Weerselo (house 15), son of Harmen Oude Griepink and Aleida Oude Steenhof.
  3. Bernardus Kolner, see Va.
  4. Geziena Kolner, * 13 March 1837 in Hasselo-Weerselo, † 16 June 1848 age 11 in Hasselo-Weerselo.
  5. Johannes Kolner, see Vb.
  6. Gerritdina (Berendina) Kolner, * 3 August 1841 in Hasselo-Weerselo, † 28 October 1911, age 71, in Gammelke-Weerselo (house 3), married in Weerselo 13 July 1865 Bernardus Oude Nijhuis, * 24 September 1836 in Weerselo, † 16 April 1902, age 65, in Weerselo, son of Hermannus Oude Nijhuis and Hendrika Holthuis. Source for some of the data and for information on all their descendants see: Family tree Oude Nijhuis.
There also has been a marriage in Weerselo on 13 April 1822 between a Johanna Gaam and a Antonij Oude Nijhuis. Johanna being a daughter of Gerrit Gaam and Maria Gaam. Probably this Maria Gaam is Maria ter Beek which makes Johanna a half sister of Maria Game. The parents of Antonij were Hendrikus and Geertruida Oude Nijhuis
  7. Gerardus Kolner, see IVc.
  8. Gerardus Johannes Kolner, see IVd.

IVb: son of III.

Johannes Kolner or Oude Aalderink, ~ 23 August 1811 rc Deurningen-Weerselo, † 13 April 1867, age 57, in Hasselo-Weerselo (house 84), married 18 November 1846 in Weerselo Geertrui Mettinkhof, * 27 October 1818 in Weerselo, † 22 November 1887, age 69, in Hasselo-Weerselo (house 86), daughter of Mannes Mettinkhof and Geziena Loschot.

Geertrui was previously married (4 October 1843) to Jannes Mettinkhof (* 27 October 1818, † 3 August 1845), son of Hendrikus Mettinkhof and of Janna ter Beek (possibly a sister of Maria ter Beek, first wife of Gerrit Game)
In none of the documents that relate to Johannes, he himself is called Johannes Kolner. The name Oude Aalderink is however not common for the hamlets of the community of Weerselo. The farm Aalderink is not far from Hasselo-Weerselo, but it is located within the hamlet of Hertme in the community of Borne Ov. That there has been a relationship between the names (Oude) Aalderink and Kolner is already shown by the name of child 1 of Generation II; Lubbertus Aelderink. In addition, his sister Elisabeth Collener was also known under the surname Beld op Olde Aalderink and one of her daughters got even christenised in October 1810 as Catharina Oude Aalderink. It is therefor entirely possible that the father of Johannes Kolner -who originally may have lived at the farm (Oude) Aalderink before his first marriage - used the name Oude Aalderink in 1811; or perhaps one of the witnesses at the christening was called Oude Aalderink. The priest obviously interpreted that name as the correct surname and wrote it down. The rest follows from that; the church records were the primary source material for the civil records and getting married as Johannes Kolner would raise questions, so Oude Aalderink was used at his marriage and consistently that name was used when he died.
There are two certificates showing however that there was a Johannes Kolner around Hasselo-Weerselo at that time. Johannes Kolner is mentioned as a witness in 1833 in the marriage certificate of his sister Geziena and is at that time 23 years old. This age is correct in relation to a birth in or about Novermber 1811. A second appearance as Johannes Kolner occurs in 1848 when he reports the death of his mother. This proofs again that in 1848 a Johannes Kolner did live in or near Weerselo. That is very significant considering the reported birth in 1847 of a female child with the name Johanna Kolner from the parents Johannes Kolner and Geertrui Mettinkhof. Other children, born in 1850 and 1858, however both have the surname Oude Aalderink.
A remarkable fact is, that for the marriage of 1846 as well as the marriage of 1882 the death certificats respective fathers are not enclosed with the marriage certificate (on the archive film that is).

From this marriage:

  1. Janna Kolner, * 25 June 1847 in Hasselo-Weerselo, † 15 October 1918, age 71, in Enschede at the house in the Emmastraat, married 20 February 1882 in Weerselo Jan Laarhuis, farmer, * 1 May 1849 in Borne Ov., son of Antonie Laarhuis and of Gesina ten Tusscher.
  2. Johannes Oude Aalderink, *  23 October 1850 in Hasselo-Weerselo, married 13 May 1885 in Weerselo Hendrika Kosterink, * 27 January 1856 in Weerselo, daughter of Antonie Kosterink and Johanna Busscher. In his birth certificate the age of his father is listed as 30 years (?).
  3. Hermannus Oude Aalderink, *  23 September 1858 in Hasselo-Weerselo. In his birth certificate the age of his father is listed as 45 years.

Va: son of IVa.

Bernardus Kolner, farmer, * 21 April 1835 in Hasselo-Weerselo, † 10 April 1915, age 69, in Dulder-Weerselo (house 33) married 22 June 1859 in Weerselo Hermina Vaarhorst, farmer's wife, * 25 May 1833 in Weerselo † 29 September 1897, age 63, in Dulder-Weerselo (house 34), daughter of Hendrina Vaarhorst and an unknown father.

Bernardus and Hermina were poor folk because a certificate has been added to the marriage documents, showing that they had no means to pay even the stamp duties for all the certificates they required to get married.
Bernardus Kolner was also known for his red hair. He served from 1854 until 1859 in the 8th Infantry Regiment
There is some confusion with regard to the mother and grandparents of Hermina Vaarhorst. In the birth certificate (1833) of Hermina her mother is also called Hermina Vaarhorst, but the death certificate of the mother (she died in 1834 at the age of 24 in Weerselo, hamlet Dulder house 63) shows a name Hendrina Vaarhorst, 'spouse' of a Gradus Oude Monnink and daughter of Jan Hendrik Vaarhorst and Hermina Hilberink. Both the daughter and a witness at the marriage by the name of Bartus Oude Monnink gave testimony under oath that this mother Hermina and Hendrina were one and the same person.
Gradus Oude Monnink reported the death of his 'wife', but there is no record of a marriage between him and Hendrina Vaarhorst. If he would have been the husband one might have expected that the names of his wife's parents would have been known to him and recorded correctly, especially because they were both still alive and farmers in the hamlet Enter (village of Wierden). But there have been other examples were names were not reported correctly. So far no marriage between a Jan Hendrik Vaarhorst and a Hermina Hilberink could be found. There is however a record of a marriage between a Jan Hendrik Vaarhorst and a Willemina Meijers. They did get a daughter Hendrina in 1810. Willemina Meijers passed away in 1835 in Enter. So, it looks as if Willemina Meijers is the correct grandmother of Hermina Vaarhorst. Her Vaarhorst line, by the way, seems to originate at a farm with the name 't Zeldam or the hamlet Zeldam (municipality of Ambt Delden). The grandfather Jan Hendrik Vaarhorst died in 1854 in the hamlet Bentelo address nr. 87, municipality of Ambt Delden.
